I currently own a 15.6" laptop (XPS 15). Buying a new one (MBP), I'm expected to pick one from these two.
Consider that I don't really like plugging in an external screen 90% of the time (it reduces my productivity), what should I prefer?
I'm big on portability, but not at the cost of a less than OK display area.
I went to a premium reseller's store today.
I'll leave most of it out (for now), but imagine being marketed Apple's "new" edge to edge display while your 4 year old XPS15 with *its* edge to edge display sits between their two MacBook Pros.
Imagine.
After speaking to official Apple India Support, and two authorized premium resellers, I am having second thoughts.
If they are unwilling to make any arrangements for me on a laptop that costs $3225 (16 GB) or $3763 (32 GB), what are the next 5 years going to be like with the same level of support?
I'd like to have tried the 16 GB variant first, where if it doesn't meet my needs, return it for the 32 GB variant.
That's not even including the price for AppleCare+ ($470).
MBP13 with 512 GB storage, 16 GB memory and AppleCare adds up to $2500. Nothing compared to over $4000 and I can always upgrade a couple of years later if 16 GB is too limiting constantly.
@celia smol -> cute
@celia I was recently wandering something similar, so I ended up emulating a smaller screen (https://twitter.com/meduzen/status/1469309242654212097) and stick to it a couple of days to see if I could get used to it. Maybe it could help you get an answer.
@celia Honestly I've found 14" screens to feel way more portable - though you will likely have a harder time doing side-by-side editing if your eyes can't handle a small font (mine can't). So when I'm mobile I mostly just use a single editor window.
@funnylookinhat It’s rare I find myself doing side by side *code* editing. When I do, I quickly hide the tree/file explorer and it looks good to me. But that’s in my 15.6”
Thanks for your input btw
@celia why not the third option: upgrade RAM and hard drive, put in a new battery... And run a Linux distro, it will feel like new! LMDE is great when switching from Windows and Elementary is a good MacOS replacement.
@celia I really like the 14” ones personally, but I voted 16” in your poll, based on your description because the cost of being wrong I disproportionate. If 14 would be fine and you get the 16, you will be irritated whenever portability is an issue. If 14 isn’t fine and you get that, you will be irritated every time you use it.
Ideally, obviously, try to get your hands on one to try, even for a few minutes, but I really think the 14” is great, and the screen is superb.
@celia I use this “what will irritate me more, when” framework a lot. I find it really helpful.
My mentor had one of the old 17” PowerBooks, back when that was a thing. I thought it looked absurd, but he loved it. The 12” I had then was probably my favorite laptop ever, relative to the time.
@celia as someone with ~100" of screen, I would hesitate to call 16" 'moving up'. If I lost an inch and a half, I wouldn't even notice it. You will.
@celia i think coming down to 14 will be fine
@celia I prefer large displays but the 16" MBP is unnecessarily big.
You can visit a store to check it out personally and see what suits you best.
I moved down from 15.6" to 14" MBA a few months back and I don't regret it.
@celia This edge-to-edge thing is a bit silly anyway, because it's not really right up to the edge. Why not just call it a "super slim bezel" or something, nobody would mind it being more honest right?.. But then I remember all the other marketing stuff and nonsense terminology around computers and honestly I can't choose now to start caring, I'm *done* with it
@celia Those are insane amounts of money for a computing device
@celia Is the RAM still upgradable on newer Macbooks? I thought it was all soldered onto the logicboard these days
@Shrigglepuss Soldered yes. I meant I could sell the device to someone else and then buy a new one later. I'd be happy if I could get even $1000 from the sale to contribute back to a new MBP.
@celia Oh sorry I should have read more closely, just hit me that you meant to replace the whole laptop. Ridiculous how something that used to be so quick and easy as a RAM upgrade is allowed to cause this much hassle now
@Shrigglepuss Bonkers. It's stupid. Annoying. Waste of money. Materials. Fuck this.
@celia that’s the reason I usually prefer the stock configuration of Apple devices. Their upgrade prices are way off and may account to a 50% price increase. Go with the stock item and use it as long as it’s fitting you. Even after 2-3 yrs you will get a decent amount of money for a used device (in good condition), so you can upgrade to a higher specced one once it becomes the „new“ stock option;)
