I currently own a 15.6" laptop (XPS 15). Buying a new one (MBP), I'm expected to pick one from these two.

Consider that I don't really like plugging in an external screen 90% of the time (it reduces my productivity), what should I prefer?

I'm big on portability, but not at the cost of a less than OK display area.

After speaking to official Apple India Support, and two authorized premium resellers, I am having second thoughts.

If they are unwilling to make any arrangements for me on a laptop that costs $3225 (16 GB) or $3763 (32 GB), what are the next 5 years going to be like with the same level of support?

I'd like to have tried the 16 GB variant first, where if it doesn't meet my needs, return it for the 32 GB variant.

That's not even including the price for AppleCare+ ($470).

MBP13 with 512 GB storage, 16 GB memory and AppleCare adds up to $2500. Nothing compared to over $4000 and I can always upgrade a couple of years later if 16 GB is too limiting constantly.

@celia that’s the reason I usually prefer the stock configuration of Apple devices. Their upgrade prices are way off and may account to a 50% price increase. Go with the stock item and use it as long as it’s fitting you. Even after 2-3 yrs you will get a decent amount of money for a used device (in good condition), so you can upgrade to a higher specced one once it becomes the „new“ stock option;)
