Also in the back of the barn, the stables, with space for two large animals. I'm not sure what was kept there last, looks like cow dung. There used to be horses at some point, too.

When the old man gave us the tour, he pointed at the piles of compacted dung and praised its value as fertilizer. What a salesman (he's right though).

🪲🪲🪲 Citation alert from a #dung #beettle #paper 🤔🤔🤔

With Antonio Vallecillo, we already defended the idea of #modeling being a #interdisciplinary discipline (see lnkd.in/etjUgMr6) but I never expected to see my work influencing #entomologists doing research on #dung #beetles. 😁😁

(btw, the image is not fake but the citation is indeed a mistake, yet another example of the drawbacks of relying too much on #citation metrics for researchers' #evaluation)

@ReedLindwurm Per this article Splachnum ampullaceum has photosynthetic plastids ... but there's no mention of photosynthetic rate relative to other mosses. I'm assuming the moss gets nutrients from insects but carbohydrates from photosynthesis. From the paper it seems that the color is from an overproduction of yellow and red pigments (attractive to insects), and perhaps that masks the presence of chlorophylls. Splachnum ampullaceum produces a yellow- or pink-coloured hypophysis that releases volatile compounds, attracting flies to the mature moss. The biosynthetic ...

I'm carrying out a study about 2 cryptic Onhtophagus species (Coleoptera Scarabaeidae).

A paratype locality is located a few kilometers away from my forest, but associated genitalia were borrowed and never returned to NHM..

My forest provided hundreds of new specimens.

But not this year. I saw just none of them, despite summer is their time. These dung beetles follow mammals. Food chain alteration, may eventually have driven mammals away.

@samhainnight #DeSantis anyway has no choice under the US #Constitution (but who knows how the six #Falangists on #SCOTUS would rule). More importantly, he only said this after it was clear #Trump would surrender voluntarily. DeSantis‘s statement only makes it more certain the sack of fermenting #dung will turn himself in - otherwise he‘d appear weak and in DeSantis‘s debt. Like Trump, DeSantis is a bully but, even more importantly, a coward.
