the more i see software developers make localization mistakes (such as using the same string for "post" (verb, on a button to make a post) and "post" (noun, on a header when viewing a post), the more i continue to insist that they learn at least a bit of #esperanto

you can learn enough of it in two or three months to be able to read a wide variety of texts, and its grammar is clear enough that it avoids ambiguities that cause localization problems for monolingual english speakers

even if you never speak a word of esperanto again, just thinking about "oh, this is a button to make a post, so i'd use the verb form 'afiŝi' there, and that is a header displayed when viewing a specific post, so the noun form 'afiŝo' makes more sense there" when writing the localization strings will make it much easier for people who want to localize your app or website for french, german, russian, etc. (and probably also other languages, but i don't have enough expertise in that)

Hey #l10n and #i18n and probably browser experts, does the HTML `hreflang` attribute do anything? Like, never mind what the spec claims, what does it, like, *do*?

I’m diligent about using it, though as an American monolinguist, well…?

When I had an i18n biz, I recall it was useless other than SEO.

I'm against localization. English has long been international language and it's used to call IT terms that haven't translation, such as “pull request” or “commit”. In addition, all modern browsers have a page translator, so localization is just a waste of time and, as a result, money. The only exceptions may be local businesses located in certain regions and even then, this will not last long, given the widespread globalization.

After all I'm a cyberpunk fan, did you really expect me to give you a non-subjective opinion?)

(A)I translated Virtual Lab into a few languages (🇪🇸🇵🇹🇨🇳🇵🇱🇺🇦) - our Quantum Flytrap became a polyglot! I hope this will make it easier for people worldwide to learn quantum physics. For some, it might simplify things - for others, it could be a doorway to a new world. Moreover, I wanted to give lecturers, teachers, and educators the opportunity to conduct classes in their native languages.

I used Claude 3.5 Sonnet, and enhanced the Chinese translation with DeepSeek R1. Once I set up the system and automatic verification for missing keys, the rest was a breeze with i18n - a standard tool for localization. I translated everything as complete files (not piece-by-piece) within the codebase, allowing the AI to understand the context in terms of both physics and UI components.

I've taken a look at the Polish translation, and it's quite decent. By extrapolation, I believe these models should work well for other languages too, especially for widely-used European ones like Castellano Spanish or Portuguese. With Mandarin Chinese, it's my leap of faith.

If you're a native speaker of any of these languages, I'd love to hear your take! Especially if you can compare it to the English version - to help distinguish between AI translation quirks and areas where the original material could be improved.

If the results are good, I'm open to translating it into other languages as well.

I am looking for examples of Shell scripts (ideally Bourne-family) that explicitly check or adjust their locale. The most obvious issue in ignoring locale is collation order for patterns. But there are also more obscure problems like LC_NUMERIC changing how "sort -n" works.

Is there any way in HTML / JavaScript to configure the language of native form validation messages?

The browser (at least my Firefox) seems to display the labels in the preferred language that I configured in the settings, but on some website I might have configured another language at the website level (different from my Accept-Language header), and it looks super weird to have a webpage in French but form validation messages in English.
