Oh, MAN, I miss the early Internet days.

In 1991 or '92, I brought a tractor-fed dot-matrix printout about 8-10 pages long of a #NewEnglandJournalOfMedicine #NEJM article/study that was possibly related to my malady, to my #Cardiologist, & he was genuinely appreciative.

I'd used #gopher to find it. Or was it #archie ?

Can you imagine a Dr these days paying ANY attention to something I printed off the Internet today?

I stood up a local Gopher server, got my hole dug out the way I like it. Still need to make some ASCII art headers, and then put it on a server. Trouble is, where?

Uuuugh do I gotta fuck around with name sellers & DNS now? Or I can just open a port on mysticdungeon.club, that'd be fine I guess. I have some domains doing not much, but they're not suitable.

I tried getting telnet working, but it just opens Terminal and immediately exits, can't get it to debug why.

after an incredibly fruitful discussion with @ve3qbz about adding gopher support to #kiki, i decided to do some historical research on the protocol before i implement it

found this absolutely fascinating interview with Mark P. Cahill and Farhad Anklesaria - two of the five original gopher developers in 1991 - about the early history of the protocol and implementation. nice to hear a NeXT cube was used in the original design.

so who's going to be the first to redesign gopherspaceVR for 2025 😎

#Gopher has a trivial open wire protocol where the selector and a handful of item type characters do all the work, while heavy HTTP has a header and method for every kink and everything is encrypted, so Gemini splits the difference by requiring TLS 1.2 with SNI and MIME types but doesn't cache, compress or cookie.
