“Wanderer”

Our galaxy is likely filled with billions of dark rouge planets wandering through space. Torn from their orbits by haphazard gravitational interactions and flung far from the nurturing warmth of any sun, the surfaces of these orphaned worlds would quickly become frozen, desolate wastes. Despite their extreme and solitary existence, tenacious life might still survive on these cold, dark bodies, hidden underground, huddled around sanctuaries of geothermal activity near the planet’s core.

Theoretically, it’s possible for rouge planets to leave the Milky Way entirely. Stars drawn close to black holes have been observed whipping around event horizons at over 300 kilometers per second, or 0.1% of the speed of light. Brought along for the ride, planets orbiting those stars would be accelerated fast enough to achieve galactic escape velocity.

This render depicts one such lone body, continuing to hurtle through space a billion years after being ejected from the Milky Way. Lashed by intense radiation from the black hole, seas boiled away, the planet’s surface has been scoured down an iron-rich mantle.

All materials are procedural, including the stars and galaxy; built and rendered Blender using eevee.

"Flyby"

Rendered in two passes: one in Cycles for the spacecraft and exhaust, the other in eevee for the backplate, composed together in PhotoShop. Multiple passes were required due to eevee's poor handling of volumes in the exhaust. I'm certain there's a way to resolve the conflict by using just one render engine or joining the results in the Compositor, but for now I'm fairly satisfied with the outcome. The spacecraft, tiny here, will take a far more prominent place in future work.

“Unknown Pleasures”

A render of the classic Joy Division album cover, using Blender’s Geometry Nodes. I plan to use this as a music visualizer in a future project.

Designed by Peter Saville, the cover image is a ridgeline plot of successive radio pulses from PSR B1919+21, the first radio pulsar discovered by Jocelyn Bell Burnell. The image was originally created for a doctoral dissertation by Harold Craft.

Credit to u/Deadlibor on Reddit for the original node setup.
