Any #DataScience people here?
I have a huge #BeaconDB dataset here, recorded with #NeoStumbler.
I would like to play around with it a bit, display densities of radio devices on a map.
I know #QGis, is it reasonably easy to import a CSV file there, assign the coordinates to some columns etc?
Alternatively I know a bit of #R, but #RStudio is #Electron now, so that could get a hassle XD
Btw, there is a #Fedora #COPR for R-Cran packages, how is the situation on #NixOS?

#Neostumbler collects the data in the first place. While databases like #MLS (Backups), #OpenCellID and also Apples exist and are easily available, #BeaconDB only uses newly gathered data.
Neostumbler takes the real GPS location together with nearby Wifis, Cell Towers and Bluetooth beacons. These datasets get uploaded, and shortly after, clients like #geoclue or #microG that use BeaconDB, can find a location there.
Neostumbler shows an overlay map for existing data
I have visited https://beacondb.net/, and the project looks nice. But could you explain in few words, here or somewhere else, what is the use of #Neostumbler app ?
It's really not clear for me.
Is it used for location in replacement of what is today used in my eOS phone ? Is it only for collecting data for #BeaconDB ?
Thanks.
Here's a nice open source project we all can help: BeaconDB
BeaconDB is an in-development, open-source wireless network database designed to serve as an alternative network location service.
It collects and aggregates location data about wireless infrastructure—such as WiFi networks, cell towers, and Bluetooth devices—from user submissions.
Tbh, #Apple's location service can be used without big issues. #GrapheneOS does so, the data can be easily scraped.
But as a #BeaconDB contributor, I am of course happy to hear this!
There are a ton of people collecting data, it is pretty insane!
@GrapheneOS @kuketzblog
Why don't you use #beacondb ?
On a side note, do you respect, or at least plan to respect _optout / _nomap? Ie removing people's SSID entries if they contain either _optout or _nomap.
It would be good to clarify the various potential privacy issues on BeaconDB.net
If the data collection is more comprehensive, is the data it provides to #BeaconDB also richer in some way?
Should we be using it over #NeoStumbler?
Nice, there is now an #xmpp #beacondb multi-user chat and the number of participants is rising:
