As we watch a lot of funding for #research being cut, affecting vital projects and driving many talents away, I can't help seeing #academic #conferences as inappropriately decadent. Random example: this conference has an entire subpage about #sustainability: confer.co.nz/isc2026/ Does it mean #hybrid, you might ask? No. You fly to New Zealand, and pay an extra 400 - 6500 NZD if you want to attend a field trip: nearly a year's worth of a PhD student bursary in Poland. Who has this money in #sedimentology? Mostly researchers in the #fossilfuels industry.
Am I interested in the scientific content of the conference? Yes.
Am I ashamed by how sustainably and inclusively it is delivered? Also yes. I wish we scientists weren't so tone deaf sometimes.

🔴 **Evidence of the Zanclean megaflood in the eastern Mediterranean Basin**

“_Our findings provide evidence for a large amplitude drawdown in the Ionian Basin during the MSC, support the scenario of a Mediterranean-wide catastrophic flood at the end of the MSC, and suggest that the identified sedimentary body is the largest known megaflood deposit on Earth._”

Manning formula (Hydrology 💧)

The Manning formula or Manning's equation is an empirical formula estimating the average velocity of a liquid in an open channel flow. However, this equation is also used for calculation of flow variables in case of flow in partially full conduits, as they also possess a free surface like that of open channel flow. All flow in so-called...

Vortex Trapping Of Suspended Sand Grains Over Ripples

doi.org/10.1029/2023JF007620 <-- shared paper

“KEY POINTS
• Observations of vortex-trapped grains suggest delayed settling of advected grains, as well as delayed advection of grains mobilized from the bed
• Quantitative comparisons of vortex-trapped sand grains compared well with theoretical formulations by Nielsen (1992, doi.org/10.1142/1269) for a forced vortex
• Improved understanding of vortex trapping effects on sediment dynamics may decrease uncertainty in large-scale coastal model predictions..."

Spatial Data – Right At Your Fingertips!

Sometimes when you are working, you realise what a truly long way we have come in terms of readily accessible spatial data…
I am looking at remote sensed data in Alaska, both the imagery and the elevation-derived hydrology, on a pseudo-randomly-selected sand bar that maybe no one has ever stood on, just to the east of Noatak National Park – and yet I can get an excellent sense of the hydrology, sedimentology, geomorphology, even the ecology…

Matrix-supported rock (Petrology 💎)

In geology, a matrix-supported rock is a sedimentary rock of which a defined majority is the fine-grained matrix as opposed to the clasts or allochems. For a conglomerate, a rock is considered matrix-supported when clasts constitute less than 15% of its volume. Matrix support is considered characteristic of debris flow deposits, in which clasts are supporte...

Some non #MinCup24 related mineralogy.
The discussions around calcite made me think of the database of grains in sediment from my 2023 paper (nature.com/articles/s41598-023).
There is this thing we tell: aragonite is more common in the #ocean in low latitudes than in high latitudes. But I can show that with my #research !
I reprocessed the data for the shelves to show how carbonate grain mineralogy changes with latitude - for the #sedimentology classroom.

@gnsscience

Many people think the history of the Earth is hard to decipher. The geological record jumbles everything up. We set out to fact-check this in my ERC Starting Grant MindTheGap. Focusing on the mode of evolution, because that is something that we can only glean from long records, longer than anything accessible to observation or experimentation today.

Thanks to collaboration with Peter Burgess we used forward models to simulate formation of carbonate rocks and see how completeness and stratigraphic resolution affect the reconstructions. Guess what! The geological record is 👌🏻 With a bit of understanding of #sedimentology and #physics we can test is with computer experiments and it turns out even very patchy rock strata will let us reconstruct the correct mode of evolution. This opens a lot of possibilities, especially for the #microfossil community: your data is priceless to understand #microevolution.
