"Under the treaty, #Mexico sends #water from rivers in the Rio Grande basin to the US, which in turn sends Mexico water from the Colorado River, further to the west. But Mexico has fallen behind in its water payments due to drought conditions in the arid north of the country.

The treaty is very contentious south of the border, where Mexican farmers have been struggling with intense drought in recent years."

#Mexico's #WaterDebt

"The [1944] agreement obliges the United States to deliver 1.85 billion cubic meters of #water a year from the Colorado River.
In return Mexico must supply an average of 432 million cubic meters annually over a five-year cycle from the Rio Grande, which forms part of the border between the two countries.

Mexico owes the United States more than 1.55 billion cubic meters, according to the two countries' boundary and water commission."

The Desert ReviewWhy has Mexico's water debt opened new battle line with US?Mexico's water debt to the United States under a decades-old supply treaty has opened a new battlefront between the two countries, in addition to US President Donald Trump's threatened tariffs.

The USA is insisting any foreign company it does business with dismantles DEI protections. And rejects climate change.
They already have one of the worst water quality issues and ride roughshod over protections.
So we are going to give them control of our water?
