#motherboard

For the better part of a month now I’ve been waffling on whether to purchase a #Gigabyte x870 Aorus Elite or #MSI x870 Tomahawk #motherboard. Both are at the top of my budget and offer really compelling design choices. For me the priorities are a PCIe 5.0 slot, at least two M.2 (CPU) slots, and USB4.

The Gigabyte x870 features a nice neutral design that compliments the rest of my build. The compromise is the ability to have up to three 5.0 x4 M.2 slots, but at the expense of half the lanes going to the first PCIe slot (x16 down to x8). Shouldn’t be a problem now but idk about the future.

The MSI x870 features an…interesting design with green accents that I’m kind of torn about. The compromise here is halving the number of lanes going to the second M.2 slot (x4 down to x2) to power both USB4 ports. Oof.

The case for the MSI board is stronger when you consider the higher quality audio chip, broader WIFI7 frequency, gold antenna threads, better power efficiency, lower chipset temps, and passes DDR5-8000 EXO validation. The new bios looks like a pleasure to use. Just all around a solid mobo.

The case for the Gigabyte board is the fact you will always have USB4 and if you’re fine with halving your GPU lanes to get three M.2 slots connected straight to your CPU, you’re working with a fantastic board. No compromises. The Gigabyte bios is a bit older but still good.

Why do many #motherboard manufacturers like #gigabyte keep putting #NVMe M.2 slots just below the PCIe 16x slot where the GPU goes so the M.2 is right below a hot spot? And I really don't want to have to remove the GPU either just to replace NVMe disk. Especially an issue for micro-ATX boards of course, but hey all manufacturers have these bullshit product advertising facts like number of pcb layers and so on, well add another then and move the M.2 slots.

So evil #Asus
is playing games with me.
They say they will buy back my motherboard, I send it to them & now they are not paying me.😠
I did a charge-back with #Amazon but they are fighting me on it & it's looking like it will take a long time.
So I'm out a motherboard & $462.60
So my new PC build is on hold until I have more money to buy the #MSI #Motherboard I'm looking at "MEG Z790 ACE MAX EATX"
This really sux as I have everything just not a motherboard😩

Build your own NAS with this versatile, low-power mini ITX board

Intel’s Alder Lake-N and Twin Lake processors are designed to be affordable and energy-efficient chips that offer good-enough performance for a wide range of tasks. They’ve shown up in a lot of low-cost mini PCs, Chromebooks, and other laptops and tablets over the past few years.

But they also come with some trade-offs. One of the biggest is that these chips only have 9 PCIe lanes, which […]

@frameworkcomputer прислали письмо о том, что стала доступна ранее анонсированная плата на RISC-V:

frame.work/fi/en/products/deep

Уточняют, что это скорее плата для разработчиков, там распаяна память и хранилище - eMMC/MicroSD, но тем не менее новость классная.

I'm looking at getting the #MSI MEG Z790 ACE MAX EATX #Motherboard
msi.com/Motherboard/MEG-Z790-A
I'm not a fan of MSI. Especially after owning a MSI Laptop long ago that I crazy hated, so after that experience I avoid #MSI like the plague but this is the only Motherboard that checks all my boxes. I wish #ASRock made boards like this but they don't.
So after all this BS #Asus is dead to me. I can't see paying for anything they make when this is how Asus treats its customers.

Well #ASUS has screwed me over badly.
I got the #ProArtZ790-CREATOR WIFI #Motherboard 35 days ago & tested it 2 days ago because RAM was back-ordered, used up my #Amazon return time.
It's a bad board but #Asus refused to replace my defective board with a new one after only owning it for 35 days.
I will not run a refurbished board😠
I've done it before & will never do it again!
So I'm out $462.60 I'm filling with my credit card company & hope they can get my money back from #Amazon

Still looking into building a #computer in the next few months, though I'm waiting for situations to change a little before I commit to anything.

Looking at various #motherboard options, specifically those with a 120 Watt #AMD #AM5 #CPU Socket so I have a good upgrade path. Right now I've gotten it down to a few, but I notice that some of these have multiple #M.2 #SSD slots, and while I do plan to have one of them, I would like the option to have an #HDD, due to the cost-to-storage ratio.

So I'm wondering, is there a way to put a #SATA drive in an #M2 slot? I'm sure someone has made some sort of adapter...

Anyone of you interested in this one?

Personally, I already own the A600GS and I’m enjoying it a lot these days, but it would be fun to build this into an A1200 case for sure.

That was all for now. Thanks for reading! See you in another post here on the Old School Game Blog. 🙂
