It still amazes me that last year I interviewed (and sometimes befriended) #piracy figures such as #FitGirl and #Dodi, #Empress and #KaOs, alongside the developers of #DeckyLoader, #EmuDeck, #RetroDECK, #JunkStore, #HeroicGamesLauncher and...so, so, SO many more besides.

I cracked #Denuvo on a game to see how it worked, I wrote tens or thousands of words for a ton of guides for #SteamDeck gaming and tinkering, and then -

🎮 New research from Proofpoint 🎮

Threat actors are posting #YouTube videos purporting to show viewers how to download free software or video game upgrades, but the link in the video description leads to malware.

The activity, observed by Proofpoint's @EmergingThreats team, appears to come from various account types: legitimate YouTube accounts that were compromised, and likely actor-created and controlled accounts that are active for only a few hours, created exclusively to deliver malware.

One suspected compromised account had around 113k subscribers and displayed a “verified” checkmark. All new video descriptions associated with this account linked to malicious content.

Proofpoint also saw videos purporting to distribute the popular video game cracker, #empress

We reported the compromised accounts to YouTube, who was quick to remove the content. Many of these explainer videos focused on games popular among younger people, including children.

End users should be aware of the techniques used by threat actors to entice users into engaging with video game content purported to help them cheat or bypass paid functionality.
