I chose this picture at random from the online collection of the National Gallery. It came as a delightful discovery for me, since
I do not recall ever seeing this on display in any of my many visits to the gallery.

The gallery suggests that the Virgin's sumptuous attire makes it likely that the image was made for private devotional use, quite possibly for a wealthy female patron.
