Building #Python tools for astronomical data analysis?
#EuroSciPy2025 is seeking proposals on cosmic modeling, observatory data pipelines, or celestial mechanics.
Help us reach for the stars!
Astro Soft update 2024/12
#healpix is on the latest
#astropy is on the maximum possible version compatible with python 3.10
#julia on the way to package #JuliaAstro collection
Good news everyone!
October Astro soft update is out there for review in Guix.
This month brought us the latest @astropy, Stellarium and @Siril_Official.
IRAF Community, maintained
by @olebole, is packed and will be available after it's reviewed and merged.

Whoa.
`nifty-ls` claims to be a faster, more accurate drop-in replacement for #astropy's Lomb-Scargle periodogram.
I've briefly experimented with the Kepler short cadence light curve for the enigmatic δ Sct variable HD 187547 (~1M data points) and `nifty-ls` really is ~5-8× faster than the usual `fast` method, for the price of one minimal-dependency import and one keyword argument.
Plus the authors show it's more accurate, too!
Patch series is ready for review for Guix team bringing fresh astro soft 2024/07.
It's been more than a year since I've started a monthly astro update in Guix ^.^
120+ packages are on the bleeding edge with upstream in the reproducible state and ready for new researching horizons!

Meanwhile, preparing for the 2024-07 update series, bringing more new packages from the Astropy affiliated set and updating packaged already till the latest versions.
OSSci will be in beautiful Prague this Thursday, May 16. Thanks to the PyData Prague team for putting together a great agenda. 50+ people registered. Please share with your networks. Thanks!
Astro soft update 2024/03 is out for review by the Guix team!
Preparing for #pythonyt. Stabilized tests for #asdfastropy.
Who uses #guix in any type of research related to #astronomy #astrophysics, please share your wishlist of missing software.
I am working on scheduled update 2024-03 for (gnu guix astronomy), most of it is #python #astropy #jwst related packages.
It would be nice to have https://yt-project.org/
> ... supports structured, variable-resolution meshes, unstructured meshes, and discrete or sampled data such as particles. ...
The package is ready and I might include it in the upcoming update.
Good news everyone!
2024/02 #astronomy related packages update is waiting for review in #Guix.
A candle on the cake - #Astropy is updated to v6.0.0

Today I'm celebrating my first can-of-worms bug (a bug that’s discovered while fixing another bug) in #astropy !
It’s a bit paradoxical: these situations are not exactly pleasant to work through, but I find that it’s actually a signal of extreme #codequality that it’s only happening *now*, after two months on the job just tracking #bugs down !
I'm grateful to all the developers of the different open source software I use in the image capture and processing.
New bio !
This week was my last as a researcher, and starting tomorrow I'll work as a contractual research software engineer for the #Astropy project !
I am thrilled about onboarding this thriving community and excited that fixing bugs is now my job instead a distraction from it !
for anyone thinking about trying #python312 : #matplotlib , #hvplot , #astropy don't exist yet on #condaforge, but #numpy , #scipy , #pandas are there.
I'm not paid to do that!!! This is the great title from Evelina Gabasova on how to have an impact outside our work.
3 pathways:
- scientific change: not only paper publications, community recognition; with a StarWars example: https://github.com/evelinag/StarWars-social-network her most impactful work started as a curiosity/fan project.
- Open source: much of #ResearchSoftware finishes as discarded toys. Using #FAIR principles to make them Composable. Like LEGO briks.
- open source move from toys to clubs (e.g. #astropy @turingway). Find collaborations, look at what's out there before starting from 0. Embrace slow software!
