@fatboy maybe better to make a poll about which one is more decentralized and cheaper to run, better for the environment because of less resource needs and and and...oh you caught me I like XMPP ;)
@fatboy
I just recently got inn to xmpp. I like fetures matrix offers so for groups i find it much better. Xmpp is simpler in some ways and i find it kinda nostalgic in some way.
Also for hosting your own matrix i find to ve way easier to set up ecen if it is wat more resource intensive
@fatboy I give a slight edge to xmpp since I've been using it longer, but I like using both for different reasons.
@fatboy
In theory, Matrix is a supperior successor to XMPP. In practice, the Matrix ecosystem is terribly bloated.
IIRC, the flagship server is written in Python, and the flagship client "Element" is a terribly slugish webapp. Even some of the Android apps need some serious UX overhauls.
Turns out that the default config for certain servers is too generous towards the central Matrix servers.
And most of all, Matrix grew suspiciously too quickly in numbers and funding. With Amdoc, the Israeli cyber-intelligence company, as the backing of a lot of this, Matrix just smells. Just like Signal, and anything else that amassed it's appeal via funding.
These takes are not thought out. Just speaking my mind.
@fatboy I'm not on XMPP yet
@fatboy Just imagine what we could have if NewVector had decided to built their product on the XMPP standard instead of inventing their own chat protocol.... They don't seem to care about internet standards or interoperability a lot.
@fatboy I use both daily
@fatboy depends, is this 2007 or 2022?
I've used XMPP a *lot* back when it was used even by commercial services like Google Talk and Facebook.
Today, I use Matrix on chat.fosdem.org and on with their Gitter bridge, but pretty much never to chat 1-to-1 with people.
@fatboy
I actually like XMPP more, it uses fewer resources and is faster, but it has never worked well on the iOS devices in my circle of family and friends.
So I've moved most existing contacts to Matrix and tend to create new ones there as well, if possible.
Matrix is bloated and it's starting to be noticed how large their attack surface is.

A while ago, my instance admin wrote about how Matrix isn't private. I prefer to use "private by default" messengers wherever possible. I'm not sure if XMPP is any better.
@fatboy XMPP / IRC
@fatboy i wish Tox got more love and attention .
