What are the differences between fosstodon.org and hachyderm.io?

@hywan one uses a TLD that has been known to be unstable in the past, the other uses .org

@hywan I don't understand your question. Differences in what way between these two different instances ; technical, social, location, admin and mod wise, rules..?

@fnord they seem very similar: tech-oriented, open source etc. I wonder if one is more appropriate than another.

@hywan @fnord please let's break this meme that each instance should represent exclusively one type of tribe.

ActivityPub Instances should be seen no different than email servers. No one asks "which email provider is more appropriate to send messages about X?"

This seems to be the hill I'll die on: raphael.lullis.net/federations

@fnord @raphael sure, I’m familiar with Mastodon, but I was wondering why people was migrating from fosstodon to hachyderm :-).

@hywan @fnord ah, cool. Maybe fosstodon is having issues with registrations, or newer people are getting aware of the importance of spreading around to avoid recentralization?

@raphael I understand your point but I have a preference in ISPs and emailservers too (sorry). Ecosystems matter to some people in some circumstances. I think it's a good question to ask to make an informed decision. I agree with your point that forming a clique is not ideal - and can be actively damaging to one's worldview. But as someone posted earlier, that does not currently seem to be the case. And with proper warning such inward looking communities can be prevented. @hywan

@hywan both awesome instances with a lot of crossover. states their intention to create a curated network of tech professionals where as is open to anyone with an interest in regardless of whether they work in tech or not, at least that’s my interpretation.
In the words of @nova “ Hachyderm and Fosstodon are awesome friends and always will be”

Hachyderm.ioKris Nóva (@nova@hachyderm.io)@htn@fosstodon.org @andrasbacsai@fosstodon.org Hachyderm and Fosstodon are awesome friends and always will be. Our crew will be at FOSDEM and I suspect its only a matter of time before our relays are online.

@hywan I'd say mostly how the rules apply (what's allowed/forbidden, what is preferred or not, etc), and I think is much more into politics than Fosstodon.

I think that last thing prevented me from migrating there (for now). I don't have anything against hachyderm, but for now I'm more in a chill mood, just reading about Rust. Probably Fosstodon suits me better.
