The Oudemanhuispoort courtyard is a hidden gem in the city center. Tucked between Kloveniersburgwal and Oudezijds Achterburgwal, it’s part of a 17th-century complex originally built as a shelter for the elderly. Now owned by the University of Amsterdam, it hosts the Faculty of Humanities and student housing. 👩‍🎓🧑‍🎓🏛️📚

The courtyard is accessed through a covered passage known for its secondhand book market. Midway, a door opens to the quiet garden with benches, a lawn, and rose bushes… A calm escape in the heart of the city. 🌹

In the middle of the city’s ‘Red Light District’ stands the “Oude Kerk”, the city’s oldest building, founded in 1️⃣3️⃣0️⃣6️⃣. Its vast wooden ceiling, gives the Gothic interior a unique atmosphere. 🧖‍♀️🕯️

The church shifted from Catholic to Protestant after the 1️⃣5️⃣7️⃣8️⃣ Reformation. Many locals were buried here, including some prominent figures, like Saskia van Uylenburgh, Rembrandt’s wife. 🪦☠️ 🎨

Now a cultural venue, it hosts exhibitions, concerts & art. Though no longer used for services, its historic soul remains alive at the Oudekerksplein. ⛪

The sculpture at Metrostation Weesperplein honors the old “Weesperpoortstation” (1843–1939), the former railway station from which to depart to Utrecht and Arnhem. Carved in sandstone, this artwork was erected in 1941.

Created by architect Piet Kramer in the ‘Amsterdamse School’ style, it displays three layered historical locomotives representing the railways’ evolution. 🚂🚃🚄

The first steam train between Amsterdam and Haarlem (sept. 20, 1839) drove at the speed of 30 km/h and was pulled by a locomotive called “De Arend”. In 1908, the country’s first electric train took off between Rotterdam Hofplein and Scheveningen Kurhaus. It was powered by a 10,000-volt AC system from a dedicated power plant. 🔋⚡

The first diesel train followed in 1934, running from Amsterdam to Arnhem. 🚂💪

“De Piramides” (the pyramids) is a residential complex on Jan van Galenstraat. Designed by S. Soeters and fully finished in 2006. In this frame you’re looking at the back of the two 50-meter triangular towers (housing 82 apartments). 🔼🔼

Inspired by Marcanti Island’s shape and 17th-century stepped gables, its brick facades reflect the Amsterdam School style. It also serves as a noise buffer for the neighborhood behind it since the Jan van Galen (or s105) is a main entry road from the west side of town. 🚗🚕🚙🚙🚑🚛🛻🚒🚚🚙
