The high-res cockpits made for the TIE Fighter DOS CD are notably different from the original low-res versions. Perhaps most striking is how they redid all the damaged versions of the cockpit dials!
Plus, once you start the mission on floppy, the briefing officer says on the radio "Today we write a new legend for starfighter pilots, yes?"
On CD the last word was removed to be more definite: "Today we write a new legend for starfighter pilots."
The officer briefing for this battle was also edited slightly on CD. Most notably, a suggestion of how to make a sneak attack on enemy fighters in order to "catch them with their pants down" was changed to say "catch them unawares".
The briefing text for the final battle of TIE Fighter's Defender of the Empire expansion on floppy is, uh, a little more violent compared to the CD version.
The Battle 10, Mission 1 briefing has some other changes.
Notice Strike Cruiser "Intombe" became "Ayenzii" (in both the briefing and the mission)!
The CD briefing also fixed an instance of planet Kiilimaar being spelled "Kilimaar", and added an important verbal code phrase directly on the map.
More TIE Fighter changes: in the Defender of the Empire floppy expansion, Battle 10 is called "Missile Boat" on the battle selection menu, but "New Threats" in the mission briefings. The CD uses "New Threats" for both.
TIL the name of Battle 7 in the original TIE Fighter floppy version is different than in the DOS CD & later versions.
On floppy it's "Mutiny" on the battle selection screen, but "Treachery at Ottega" in mission briefings. The CD uses "Treachery at Ottega" for both.
In the CD version, when they changed the title on the battle selection screen to make it consistent, they forgot to put it in all caps to match the other battle names!
When I read this emailed article title in my head a few minutes ago, I thought of T.I.E. fighters a split-second before Thai fighters.
Also, in the original floppy version without the expansion, you can't see the "training certificate" record screen unless you have at least one certificate earned already. If you have no other medals earned at all, the "medals" tab in the Esc menu will be grayed out.
Installing the expansion changes it to how the CD version works, so the game lets you see the "training certificate" screen even if you haven't earned any yet.
If you install the expansion, the TIE Defender becomes available in the simulators, but now the Missile Boat is locked until you progress the story. But if you play on CD (with the extra storyline missions) they're both unlocked in the simulators from the start.
TIL in the original floppy version of TIE Fighter, without the expansion installed, you can't play the TIE Defender missions in the flight course or the combat training until you unlock it by proceeding through the main game.
What if "Star Wars," but 80's anime with a kick-ass rockin' guitar shredding soundtrack?
Decades ago, I was telling someone jokes over AOL Instant Messenger and she kept sending "lol" and I was like, "She must like Star Wars, she keeps sending these little tie-fighters to me..."
