I finally found time to finish writing up my thoughts on the #StarLabs #StarLite MkV, a Linux-native tablet: https://www.lionsphil.co.uk/chaos/starlite/
It's...definitely a very, very, reserved recommendation. But also a chunk of y'all who read my toots are the kind of people who are braced for Linux.
@david_bardos Keep an eye on our platforms #starlite
I know I haven't been posting a lot lately, but I wanna say that my @starlabssystems StarLite MK V is becoming better by the month.
The battery time improved quite a bit with recent updates and I am still enjoying the great display and speed overall!
In fact I believe this is pretty much the best linux tablet you can currently get.
Damn, the rotation fix didn’t work. I’m not sure if it’s the syntax for selecting the accelerometer or if it’s the udev commands.

Making progress on getting @starlabssystems's StarLite5 tablet ready for Sculpt OS. I've been experimenting with adding touch gestures to @genode's event filter. I had a great time implementing swipe gestures as well as press-and-hold for right-clicking. Have a look...
I have a @starlabssystems Starlite MK V and I want Gnome to go into the "Tablet" mode whenever I fold the keyboard to the back (deactivate keyboard and open the on screen keyboard). It seems like there is no intended way how to do that therefore I wrote a small workaround.
Does anyone have a better idea?
Is anyone using the Starlite Linux tablet by Starlabs, or have an opinion on it? I am in need of a new daily driver tablet and would like to go full Linux, if possible.
@starlabssystems Also: for some reason after I upgraded coreboot to 24.08, the #Starlite would not automatically boot Debian; I had to create a boot entry to automatically run shimx64 rather than grubx64 (which does however boot manually).
This moment when right before the holidays your @starlabssystems #Starlite V suddenly stops seeing any Wifi or bluetooth because the last #Debian #Bookworm update now requires iwlwifi firmware version -77 to -89 but the stable firmware-iwlwifi package provides -72, and you need to switch it to backports to get -77, only you have no Wifi or BT... (of course I have an USB Wifi dongle *and* an USB-C to USB A adapter precisely for these cases)
Decorated my Starlite keyboard cover! Woohoo!
Hmm, I wonder if this is actually an issue with tap-to-click not getting disabled when the disable touchpad while typing setting is on in GNOME and/or the StarLite firmware.
I’ve just re-enabled the trackpad but turned off tap to click and I don’t seem to be seeing the problem (and the mouse cursor does disappear while typing, which is did before too).
Hmm… I’ll update the issue and fingers crossed they’ll be able to fix it for tap-to-click too.
Right, disabled the trackpad entirely and I can at least type again.
Thankfully, it’s a tablet (although you can’t use it for programming – at least in Terminal, e.g., with Helix – in tablet mode because the on-screen keyboard in GNOME does not have all the keys you need. e.g., ESC is missing. Kind of a biggie when using a modal editor) so I can use the touch-screen if I need to (not ideal ergonomically when using it docked but goodness it feels good to be able to type again.
If you have the @starlabssystems StarLite 5 Linux tablet and the touchpad on the magnetic keyboard doesn’t disable when typing for you (didn’t for me, although I’m on the latest firmware), see the fix here:
#Linux #Laptop bubble: what should I go for? #framework laptop 13 or #starlabs #starlite? I'm migrating from iPad Pro, so I can regain some control over my hardware and data.
StarLite tablet and Debian Testing
Full post here. https://rene.seindal.dk/2024/08/15/starlite-tablet-and-debian-testing/
I received my StarLite mk V Linux tablet from StarLabs systems a couple of weeks ago. It came with Ubuntu, but as a Debian user for some twenty years, my preference was for Debian, as I have on all the other computers.
I tried with Ubuntu for a while, but even if the differences aren't that huge, it was still a nuisance.
My main preoccupation was that I'd lose much of the tablet-specific parts, such as the touch interface, if I abandoned the vendor supplied OS.
Consequently, I have installed Debian Testing on the thing.
The TL;DR is that everything works, almost out of the box.
My StarLite tablet by StarLabs arrived today preloaded with elementaryOS, but I'm severely underwhelmed, both by Gnome on a tablet and by the experience in general. I'm considering returning it.
Is there something I'm missing? A better distro? Basic settings that I just need to apply?
