"This could now become the gold standard for how covalent drugs are developed from now on," says [Jeffrey] Agar, an associate professor of chemistry and pharmaceutical sciences [at Northeastern University].

The goal is to make the technique free and available to labs small and large, part of what Agar refers to as the "democratization of science."

"We decided not to patent this," he says. "Just take it, use it and make drugs safer."

Phys.org · Free tool streamlines ALS drug discovery with mass-spectrometry based modelBy Cynthia McCormick Hibbert

We're down at the Rose in June pub here in Portsmouth (with @MathC amongst others) for the annual charity folk and beer festival. Over fifty ales and ciders, folk singers, Morris dancers, and all raising money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association. Great cause, great event.

Have I drunk enough to sing along with sea shanties? You bet I have!

Rob Burrows Tribute

His death was very sad, but during his difficult time Rob Burrows did so much for #mnd. He shows that while sports people are remembered for their sport, they often go onto make even bigger contributions elsewhere when they themselves face a huge difficultly.

#MND is a terrible disease, a close family friend died from it a few years ago. It can progress very fast, and is terrible to watch.

Sky NewsRob Burrow: Minute's silence held ahead of Leeds Rhinos and Leigh Leopards matchBurrow, who was diagnosed with the degenerative disease barely two years after ending his playing career, died earlier this month at the age of 41 after a four-and-a-half-year battle.

As someone who lost his mother to I know only too well what a horrible disease it is for a family to endure.

Rob Burrow (and Kevin Sinfeld) did a lot to raise the issues around it and I thank them from the bottom of my heart for the way they brought it to the fore.

My deepest sympathies are with his family and all those Rob leaves behind.
