James Russel Miller, Presbyterian leader in PA and IL, reflects on Matthew 25:31-46. A claim to love Christ must be shown by love to his friends. Jesus presents himself to us in needy people: “I was hungered, and you gave me meat.”

Miller refers to both Christ’s “friends” and to “every needy person”. One could write a treatise on this. Some might want to limit target of aid, but Miller makes a blur.

How can you show your affection for Christ?

We say we love Christ, and he tells us that we must show our affection for him in kindnesses to his friends. Then he goes farther and puts himself before us, to be served and helped as if personally in every needy and suffering one who comes to us: 'I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat..' "

Alexander Crummel, Episcopal minister, refutes racist argument of “Dr. Tucker”. One can’t say Black people are inherently lazy if agricultural reports show increase in production after the end of slavery. These slanders are unjust, and verily “injurious”.

Productivity went up with freedom.

How can you work against slanders against people groups? Even grains of slander that were internalized in your own presuppositions?

"If Dr. Tucker will glance at the great increase of the cotton, tobacco, and sugar crops South, as shown in Agricultural Reports from 1865 to 1882, and reflect that NEGROES have been the producers of these crops, he will understand their indignation at his outrageous charges of 'laziness and vagabondage;' and perhaps he will listen to their demand that he shall take back the unjust and injurious imputations which, without knowledge and discrimination, he makes against a whole race of people."
