I'm on a mission to find as many Tiger Beetles as I can this year.
Today: Purple and Oblique-lined TBs (Cicindela purpurea and C. tranquebarica) .
They are small predators (about 1 cm long) with scary mouthparts, who can run at up to 9 km/h (5.6 mph)! Match that!
Photographed from a distance with a long lens.
I would never have seen this fellow if he hadn't moved. He's tiny and the color of the sand in this creekside sandbar.
The Ornate Checker Beetle (Trichodes ornatus) starts life as an egg inside a flower! After hatching, its larvae hitch a ride on bees or wasps to their nests, where they feed on host larvae. After overwintering, they pupate and emerge as colorful adults, living up to two months.
My first rose chafer of the year. More glamorous but less amusingly-named than its relative the cockchafer, which we don't get around here.
“It’s like, how much more green could this be? And the answer is none. None more green.”
Six-spotted Green Tiger Beetle
The burrowing bees are so cute. They'll sit right at the entrance of their holes and, when you pass by, immediately retreat. However if you wait patiently they'll come back up again.
I thought I also saw immense bees buzzing around, but they turned out to be furry scarab beetles of some kind!
