Now with video, hopefully. This is an update to my earlier post with the addition of motion. This was taken at a recent bat emergence at Bracken Cave, Texas. This colony is the world’s largest concentration of mammals. It is a maternal colony of Mexican Free-tail bats that gathers each summer to birth their pups. 20 million bats (estimated) leave the cave each night at this time of the year as the pups are old enough to fly with their mothers to feed on mostly agricultural pests to our south east. This nightly exodus last about 3 hours every summer night.

The epigyne (or epigynum) is the external genital structure of female spiders. It's found on the underside of the abdomen. Size and shape can varies among species, and is useful in diagnosing species. I'm interested in variation among individuals within a species--so I'm photographing them.

There's an #iNaturalist project which gathers observations that include photos of the epigyne and the male palpal bulb.

FYI, Asian needle ants (Brachyponera chinensis) are in the Philadelphia area. Their painful sting can induce anaphylaxis, so be careful. If you find them please submit pic to iNaturalist so Michael Skvarla (Penn State) can come collect samples for confirmation. #ants #stinging #stinger #inaturalist #invasive #insects #anaphylaxis #delco #philadelphia #pennsylvania #hymenoptera share.inquirer.com/OTb0j7

@ohm nice overview. #iNaturalist also needs the coastlines buffered to catch sightings in the littorall zone. I've done something similar with one vice-county for Ireland, but am not aware of a good way to achieve this for several boundaries at once.
