WGME · Here's where to find warming centers around MaineSome Maine communities are opening warming shelters due to the bitter cold temperatures that are expected to last several days.

I would love to attend the #PresidentsDayProtest in #AugustaMaine (assuming there is one going on), or stage a #ProtestOfOne in #PortlandMaine, but the weather in #Maine is not looking good. I will be bugging our #Congress members and will amplify what's going on everywhere else!

Meanwhile, here are some things you can do to support the #50501Movement...

Hundreds protest President Trump's agenda in Augusta during national day of action

Maine Public | By Kevin Miller
Published February 5, 2025

"Despite freezing temperatures, several hundred people gathered outside of the Maine State House on Wednesday to protest the Trump administration's chaotic, first two weeks in office.

"The event was part of a national day of protest in state capitals. But #Maine's rally also highlighted the growing frustrations among some #Democrats and #progressives about what they say is a weak response from #DemocraticLeaders.

"This movement is for the people and by the people. We do not need a party," said #NicholasJackson [my hero!] of Hallowell, who obtained a permit for the event after the local Democratic committee canceled a rally over fears of 'infiltrators.'"

WMEH · Hundreds protest President Trump's agenda in Augusta during national day of actionBy Kevin Miller

I may have been by myself in #PortlandMaine today, but that wasn't the case a few weeks ago (while I was recovering from ick). #MaineResistance is real (and folks turned out in droves in #AugustaMaine today).

#Maine groups march against #Trump administration ahead of Inauguration Day

PORTLAND, Maine — "Maine-based groups took to the streets of Portland Saturday to protest the incoming Trump administration ahead of #InaugurationDay.

"#ThePeoplesMarch was hosted as a response to #Project2025, the far-right political roadmap that has been linked regularly to Donald Trump.

"'All people from all sides of the aisle, including Republicans and Democrats, have the duty to flag that #fascist policies are antidemocratic,' said march organizer Dania Bowie."

I was at a protest of one today in #PortlandMaine (not the first time). Unfortunately, I wasn't there on #January20 because I was getting over being sick, but there was a great turnout that day.

And it seems #AugustaMaine had a decent turnout today as well, so that's good.

But even though I was there by myself, most folks who saw me were supportive, a few thanked me, and only one #MAGA-type said that my protest was "Bullshit!" To which I replied, "You'll find out soon enough."

I don't mind being a protest of one, but next time, I plan on bringing some pepper spray just in case, and some cash for unhoused folks - who were way more supportive than some of the well-off passerbys.

#DumpTrump’: More than 100 demonstrators gather in #AugustaMaine in national wave of protest
By: AnnMarie Hilton - February 5, 2025 1:10 pm

"Demonstrators stood in the frigid cold outside the #MaineStateHouse on Wednesday in protest of the Trump administration and the involvement of unelected billionaire Elon Musk in federal policy.

"Dozens of signs with messages such as 'Dump Trump' and '#StopElonsCoup' filled the space between the State House and the Cross Building as 150 to 200 protestors chanted about protecting the U.S. Constitution, saving education — a nod to President Donald Trump’s efforts to disband the Department of Education — and stopping the rise of #fascism.

"The protest coincided with a national day of action against Trump, condemning the administration’s moves during his first few weeks in office. Thousands of protesters showed up in #RaleighNorthCarolina on Wednesday, while other demonstrations were held across the country.

"The Kennebec County Democratic Committee had initially helped promote the local rally but in a Facebook post Tuesday said it had pulled its permits with Capitol Police after the event was 'infiltrated by bad actors.'

"However, people like Louis Sigel of Gardiner still decided to show up because he said they shouldn’t be intimidated by people looking to upend the protest. Sigel, who was wearing an #ACLU shirt and holding a sign that said 'Move the embassy back to Tel Aviv,
said he contacted other progressives he knew and told them to come, regardless of the change. "

Anti-Trump protest in Augusta still on despite confusion

Two organizers dropped out, but the event, part of a nationwide day of protest, is still set for noon at the State House.

"A protest against President Donald Trump scheduled for Wednesday afternoon at the State House is expected to go on, despite its two official organizers canceling because of “bad actors looking to spread hate, misinformation, and turmoil.”

"Protests are expected the same day at state capitals across the country in response to orders made by President Trump in his first two weeks of his second term, as well as #Project2025, a playbook by the conservative #HeritageFoundation for changing American government and society whose contributors have been hired throughout the Trump administration.

"The protest is scheduled between noon-8 p.m.

"#KennebecCountyDemocrats and a group called the #WomensMarchAugusta, Maine, both took out permits for the protest and were set to act as co-sponsors.

"However, on Tuesday both groups rescinded their official involvement in the event 'out of an abundance of caution.'

"'The event planned for tomorrow has been infiltrated by bad actors looking to spread hate, misinformation, and turmoil,' the group said in a post on its Facebook page.

“'We have pulled our permit with the Capitol Police and any one who shows up will be considered on their own. People should know we expect bad actors to show up to cause havoc please be vigilant and careful if you do decide to go anyway,' said the post.

"However, another community member has since secured a permit, so the protest is still on."

More of this, please...! Though we need more AFFORDABLE HOUSING, not just "Market Rate".

Old #ShoppingPlazas could see new life as #housing in #Maine

With #VacantStorefronts becoming a common sight, municipalities are exploring redevelopment to meet growing housing needs.

Caroline LeCour
November 7, 2024

AUGUSTA, Maine — "On the hunt to create more housing stock in Maine, more municipalities are eyeing vacant retail #ShoppingMalls as the solution.

"After the former #KMart at the #AugustaPlaza closed its doors, many city leaders eyed the location for its potential.

"'The redevelopment of the K-Mart plaza has been a priority for the city and city council for over four years now,' Augusta Director of Economic Development Keith Luke said.

"Now, a new proposal is looking to re-develop the space into a hotel, retail space, and 60 market-rate apartments. Its something Luke says is needed in the city.

"'These are bringing quality market rate units to the city because we have a need in central Maine for housing at every level,' he said, 'It's hard not to envision it will be tremendously successful.'

"A similar proposal was approved in #KitteryMaine earlier this year, to re-develop the location of former outlet stores, partially into more than 100 apartments.

"To encourage this interest coming from municipalities, Republican Representative Richard Campbell introduced legislation last year to equip towns and cities when looking to re-zone from commercial to residential; something that can at times pose a challenge.

"'Most of the local zoning, residential is not allowed in those commercial zones,' Campbell said. 'What this does is encourages the towns to consider residential in the commercial, especially in the big box, mall zones.'

"Augusta's city council members are set to take up contract zoning requests for the Augusta Plaza proposal next week. City leaders hope to start construction next spring."

Augusta's high temperature Wednesday tied the warmest temperature ever recorded at the site in the month of November

by Ethan Horton, November 6, 2024

AUGUSTA — "Central Maine set yet another heat-related record Wednesday, marking the third time in the past week a daily temperature record has been broken.

"Wednesday’s unofficial high temperature reached 76 F (24.4 C) in #AugustaMaine and 73 degrees (22.7 C) in #WatervilleMaine, breaking the local record of 72 degrees (22.2 C), set in 2022. The area also broke records on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, easily surpassing high temperature records set in 1956 and 2003, respectively.

"The #PortlandMaine area broke a record for the entire month Wednesday: The high of 79 degrees F (26.1 C) shattered the warmest temperature ever recorded at the site in the month of November, set at 75 degrees F (23.8 C) on Nov. 5, 2022.
