Before junk electronics from China gets Trumpflated, on impulse I ordered an endoscope that just arrived. I have no major reason to own this other that we were speculating what was behind a plaster wall in our 1942 house. But it's just a thing that looks fun, and it was still $50. I've already looked inside a couple teapot spouts, looked behind some old paneling, watched a row of flashing LEDs peeking through a tiny cooling hole on my cable modem.

My new endoscope, a thing with a screen that looks kind of like a phone or the back of a digital camera (which it is also). It has a long cable attached, most of it in a coil. The end of the cable shines a light on a Lego minifigure dressed in a red dragon mascot costume. A close up picture of the figure is seen on the screen.

Got a $20 endoscope to check out the telephone wires in the walls in my place and while it "works" it's like trying to push a 10 foot long piece of cooked spaghetti. I have a great understanding of the 1 foot area by the wall jack though. Was hoping to see if I could find a good path for Cat 6 but I think I'm going to need to just use the old telephone wires as the cable pull and hope for the best.... #homelab #endoscope #yolo

Hey Mastodonians! In the past two or three years, I have encountered situations where it would be *really* nice to stick a camera into an enclosed space (in my case they are: a mysterious void space in my friend’s house that we want to potentially open up and turn into storage space, and a couple of spaces between walls or in duct work).

I looked at a *bunch* of borescope cameras on Amazon, but they all seem to have a maximum focal range of about 4 inches. They also come with long cables, so I know I can get closer, but I’m more interested in sticking a camera in a hole and seeing what the space looks like - I *think* that means I want something that can focus farther away.

So, some questions if you have any experience with this kind of thing. Am I wrong about the range? Am I looking at the wrong kind of camera? Should I be looking at “spy” cameras or the like? What do professionals actually use in these cases? Or do they just use the borescopes and tolerate out-of-focus images?
