"The group likely responsible for the Anatolian branch of the Indo-European languages did not share the same genetic makeup as the Yamnaya. Instead, it descended from a distinct but related population, which they identify as the Caucasus–Lower Volga (CLV) group, preceding the Yamnaya and forming part of the earlier expansion of Indo-Anatolian speakers."

In the early morning hours of February 6, 2023 a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck #Turkey’s #East #Anatolian #Fault Zone, followed only hours later by a magnitude 7.5 aftershock.

The city of #Kahramanmaraş lies in between the epicenters of the two strong quakes, and was especially hard hit.

These two images compare the city center before the earthquake (left) on April 3, 2021; and after (right) on February 9, 2023.

Rubble from destroyed buildings is clearly visible, as are tents covering the 12 Şubat Stadium field. Both images were collected by Planet’s high-resolution SkySat satellites. For access to disaster data please email disaster-access@planet.com.
