Today in Labor History July 4, 1840: The anti-rent association of Berne in the Hudson Valley issued its Declaration of Independence, starting the Anti-Rent War, which lasted until August 1845. Also known as the Helderberg War, the anti-rent war was a tenants' revolt in upstate New York against the patroons, who acted as feudal lords with the right to make laws. The first meeting of the Anti-Rent tenant farmers was held in Berne, New York on July 4, 1839. Leaders of the revolt were tried for riot, conspiracy and robbery in 1845. The first trial resulted in no convictions. A re-trial in September 1845 saw a fist-fight between the attorneys who were sentenced to solitary confinement for 24 hours. One defendant, Smith A. Boughton, was sentenced to life imprisonment, but was pardoned by the pro-Anti-Renter John Young.

Potentially of interest to anyone in Western Sydney who's renting.

"Fury over secret recording of landlords joking about using renters as 'target practice'

Members of Acorn tenants union were also branded ‘fascists’ at a meeting of the Eastern Landlords Association, causing renters to brand the comments ‘out of order’

Renters from the Acorn tenants union have branded comments made at a landlord conference as 'out of order after a secret recording captured landlords suggesting they are 'used as target practice'.

An audio recording confirmed to have been made at the Eastern Landlords Association (ELA) conference and AGM on 16 May heard unnamed members of the audience make disparaging, unchallenged comments about renters in Acorn’s Norwich branch.

Members at the ELA meeting can be heard to call Acorn members 'wankers', 'fascists and mocking men at an Acorn meeting wearing nail varnish. The recording ends with one person in the audience asking: 'Can we use them [Acorn] as target practice before the shooting season?'"

Google DocsOpen Letter Stop the Eviction of residents in Emergency Direct Provision AccommodationTo IPAS, The Department of Integration, Department of Housing and City and County Councils, CATU and MASI demands the withdrawal of eviction notices by IPAS and the provision of suitable accommodation and wrap-around support for people being threatened in direct provision and emergency accommodation. Hundreds of people are being threatened with eviction this month. They have been told to leave current direct provision accommodation, uproot themselves from their communities and move across the country, or potentially end up on the streets. CATU Ireland, will defend our members from evictions, discrimination and mistreatment by the state and private landlords. We demand that IPAS: 1) Withdraw the eviction notices immediately. We also demand that the Department of Integration, Department of Housing and City and County Councils engage with CATU as a union and do the following: 2) Organise suitable alternative accommodation which is agreed by residents. 3) Provide wrap around mental health and community support services for every resident.

(Note: #Publichousing is owned & managed by the state government, rent is cheapest /lower % of income … whereas community housing is managed & owned, by “not-for-profit” organisations which charge higher % of income thus higher rents.)
