Timo Zimmermann<p>I’ve now been using <a href="https://social.screamingatmyscreen.com/tags/Bazzite" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Bazzite</span></a> (desktop) and <a href="https://social.screamingatmyscreen.com/tags/Silverblue" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Silverblue</span></a> (laptop) for some time. I don’t think it’s worth it.</p><p>I like the idea. Sandboxing is kind of appealing. But realistically no Debian box failed updates for decades and there are quite a few. And I don’t have tons of software installed anyway.</p><p>Installing software like Docker is super annoying. Flatpaks feel less table than installing the same software via apt / yum / dnf.</p><p>Atomic spins aren’t bad, just not enough value that I’d recommend it.</p>
electragician<p>I installed Fedora Silverblue 42 Beta on my smaller "all Intel" laptop. Bluefin is still on my desktop replacement laptop, error free.</p><p>I might be an oddball in that I wanted to play around with Silverblue's beta, as I've never used Silverblue. I started with Bluefin and I'm working backwards (or maybe laterally) :D</p><p>I like it. Thankfully there's no need for layering on this machine. Install was easy, though it did crash while creating my user. Fluchtkapsel<p>Yesterday, I wanted to re-fit an old Toshiba Satellite U840-113 (PSU4SE) with Linux for a friend. He asked for something like ChromeOS because he doesn't want to care about anything and mostly uses the browser anyway, so I chose Bluefin. After booting with a Ventoy stick (just mentioned because it might be the cause for what followed), I think it's Anaconda which displayed an error dialog for a few moments before the system shutdown again, leaving me without a chance to find out what happened.</p><p>I shrugged it off, blamed Bluefin and went on to download Silverblue. Same thing. Okay, maybe it's because the old hardware and Anaconda don't work together. So I downloaded Fedora Workstation.</p><p>Interestingly, on clicking the "Install" button, it errored out apparently in the same way but without shutting down. I could restart the installer and that worked. 1/2</p><p><a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/bluefin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bluefin</span></a> <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/silverblue" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>silverblue</span></a> <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/anaconda" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>anaconda</span></a> <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/fedora" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fedora</span></a></p>

I'm not sure whether I fully grasp the idea behind #fedora #silverblue.... Somehow lots of common debugging tools like tcpdump and strace seem to be missing. Installing them in a toolbox or via Flatpak doesn't make much sense. Today I tried to debug a Forticlient issue which required me to run strace as root on directly on the host. Also tcpdump isn't very useful if it's not run as root on the machine itself rather than in a container. What am I missing? Is everyone creating an overlay with the usual debugging tools you expect to find on a #linux machine?

So, I have been using Project Bluefin the past few days, on two separate devices.

One is my now aging "gaming laptop" a circa 2018 nVidia Optimus equipped Dell G7, and the other an all Intel equipped Lenovo T14 that I bought used off eBay a couple years back.

So far I like everything about it... so much so that I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop and the suck to appear, but so far there's nothing but pleasant surprise after pleasant surprise.

Installing Fedora Silverblue on a Thinkpad L14 that my son doesn’t use anymore. Goodbye Windows 11.

I like my Alienware X14 R1 running Fedora, but there are some niggles about the hardware. It’s a 14” laptop with the footprint of a 16”. Its wrist rest is super short and trackpad tiny. The keyboard is mediocre.

I think I just ran into a great example of how different tasks can require different energy levels that don't necessarily match their "difficulty".

I recently got a "new to me" laptop and at first set it up with Fedora Workstation but quickly realized I much prefer Fedora Silverblue (not the point of this post, so I won't get into why here) and needed to re setup everything. I didn't want to click through a ton of apps in GNOME Software and install them all individually then organize them in the overview.

So instead of doing all that manually I wrote a bash script from scratch to:

- remove any rpm packages I didn't want
- remove any flatpaks I didn't want
- reinstall fedora flatpaks from flathub
- remove the fedora flatpaks repo
- layer the few rpm packages I wanted
- install all the flatpak apps I wanted.
- create custom folders in the overview
- sort all the apps in those custom folders
- pin my most used apps to the dock

This felt like it required way less energy for me. Not because it was easier or faster. In fact I'm really rusty at bash scripting and I didn't even know how to organize the overview from the terminal, so I even had to learn something new and it probably took me way longer. But writing a little script was more fun for me and therefore didn't feel draining or overwhelming like the tedious task of clicking around for a couple hours would have.
