One Big Self
In 1998 photographer Deborah Luster photographed members of Louisiana's prison population after the unsolved murder of her own mother.. The inmates chose how they would be seen - to present a message to their loved ones.. Luster removed any modern prison features from the background + printed them in black + white on sheets of metal with an amber glaze to produce the look of a Civil War tintype.
The project lasted 5 years + each subject was presented with a paper wallet size copy as metal objects are not allowed behind bars.
