Heute vor 39 Jahren verhindert Stanislav Jefgrafowitsch #Petrov den nuklearen Schlagabstauch zwischen der Sowjetunion und den USA. Er behielt als Offizier vom Dienst die Nerven, als die sowjetische Satellitenaufklärung fehlerhaft einen Raketenangriff der USA meldet.
Habían pasado 14 minutos de la medianoche, ya empezaba a correr el 26 de septiembre de 1983 en Moscú y el teniente coronel Stanislav #Petrov distinguió algo extraño desde su búnker donde debía verificar sobre cualquier ataque norteamericano. Un satélite soviético advertía sobre un misil nuclear intercontinental que en 20 minutos alcanzaría a la U.R.S.S.
Lejos de inquietarse, el oficial pensó que debía tratarse de un error. Pero poco después, las alarmas volvieron a indicar la presencia de 4 misiles más que rumbeaban hacia Rusia. En vez de ordenar un contrataque, que era lo que ordenaba el protocolo, decidió seguir esperando. El tiempo le dio la razón, todo se trataba de una extraña coincidencia; los satélites, el sol y la tierra se habían alineado provocando un extraño error en los detectores térmicos que enviaban las señales desde el espacio.
Cuando se lo consultó por la decisión que tomó, Petrov aseguró “la gente no empieza una guerra nuclear con 5 misiles”. Había culminado el “Incidente del equinoccio de Otoño” que habría terminado con el mundo tal cual lo conocemos.
