What's the real function of the police? Think critically.
Police don't enforce the law. The biggest form of theft in America by magnitudes is the under-payment of wages owed to workers and a cop has never done anything about that unless the wages owed were his own. Politicians and CEOs break laws every day that cost billions in public funds and thousands of lives and police do not a thing.
The function of the police is to enforce *social order*, which incidentally involves the selective enforcement of laws. At the most basic level of the apple-pie American small town cop, this is their function. And the social order is one of violent tyranny. It's one in which the voracious, predatory rich rob grandmas of medicine and children of food, where powerful pedophiles and misogynists exploit and abuse, where bosses and landlords exploit and degrade the working people. And the cops keep the bosses and landlords protected from any reaction.
And the working people, the poorest of the people, are disproportionately black and brown and queer because of a whole set of oppressions built into the system. And so hatred of black and brown and queer people and women becomes part of the social fabric, and keeping them in place part of social order. And so by their nature the police become the enemy of everyone but the most privileged and powerful, enforces of white supremacy and straightness and patriarchy.
This may be hard to swallow but it is the truth. Police don't keep us safe - but they can get us killed. Community security will be organized and funded by the people within our own neighborhoods - and until it is, it won't exist.
