#blocky

Today I found #Blocky. A cool #PiHole alternative that is available in the nix packages. I configure Blocky, integrate it into Grafana and find that I can't edit the DHCP Server in my plastic router. Now I'm sitting here and looking at how I can build my own #NixOS router. Typical course of projects. -.-

Note to self: When converting a Kubernetes cluster with Cilium as CNI to replace MetalLB with Cilium's new L2 announcements, you need to tweak some settings in your Cilium installation. Especially enabling Cilium to act as a kube-proxy replacement (if you are not already doing so) and enabling the l2 announcements. Which means kube-proxy needs to be disabled in k3s.

In other words: k3s on my Raspi4 is now providing a loadbalancer to blocky using Cilium's L2 announcements...

Spanish version at the end:

I'm resurrecting an old raspberry pi and now i'm wondering about what are the alternatives to #pihole and what are their advantages / disadvantages.

I was aware about #pfsense
+ #pfblockerNG but checking now internet I found #technitius and #blocky.

I plan also to deploy a vpn, wireguard if possible and if not, the old openvpn and setup wake on lan for the main server at home.

Do you tested any of the alternatives i mentioned or are you aware of something even better?

What are your thouhgts about them?

Thanks!

Pihole on Freebsd? noGo and it is limited compared to Blocky
So a bit of searching did the trick:

I setup Blocky Grafana Prometheus node-exporter and more on a Freebsd jail to block ads / get insight into my network (and peers).

I used these guides and they helped me a lot: thanks to the authors!

I'm not exactly sure how I got here! I been trying to figure out my DNS infra for some damn reason. It's DNS who the fuck cares. I can't let it go!

I just want to exercise my second DNS server, cause it's just there. So lets put #dnsdist in front of it, solid!. It gave me a promfana endpoint to see shit. Dope! Then I'm like I want that for my DNS servers! Insert #coredns. It's coo! Fast! Easy to use! Ad blocking, not so much. Insert #blocky. Ok WTF is going on!

So I wanted to install #blocky on #FreeBSD . Oh look! It works with #Prometheus and #PostgreSQL. Huh, my monitoring psql instance is still 15.x, need to update that. Let me get my psql notes from my #OrgRoam archive. Weird, something isn't loading. Oh crap, looks like an #emacs package isn't installed right... quick, let me reinstall my packages again just to make sure. Wow, I need to fix up my #emacs config now, I see some bad settings.

Um, what was I doing again?
