New blog post!
In which I show how I am powering a typical 120mm PC case fan from a USB port to quietly cool my Raspberry Pi cluster.
CW: bad soldering skills
btw, my cluster reached almost 10k points in @einsteinathome
@stfn You can get case fans that plug in via USB you know?
@tripplehelix but there's no DIY fun in that
@stfn why don’t you use USB 3? It can give you faster speed
@7666 @mikolasan but what about USB-C?!
@7666 @mikolasan nothing will surprise me about the mess that is the USB ecosystem
@stfn @7666@comp.lain.la terrible idea - this will make possible to connect your DIY board upside down
@mikolasan oh no, that would make it run in reverse!
@stfn hmm, yes but which way of air flow is the correct one?
@mikolasan looks like we are getting into deep philosophical questions
@stfn, I followed the instructions in https://www.instructables.com/How-To-Convert-A-Case-Fan-To-USB/ successfully last weekend to power a fan with a PWM connector using USB. It was fairly straightforward and worked okay.
@artfulsodger sure, that's another solution :)
