@blainsmith In my opinion, appliances should either not be computerized at all, or do all of the following:
- Running a fully FLOSS operating system (although, especially for the early boot stages, there will probably be some proprietary firmware blobs)
- Local-first, cloud-next (or not at all) design
- Bootloader unlocking (and/or relocking on custom keys)
@hexaheximal @blainsmith the bare minimum should be a local API,so you can keep using it once the official cloud-service is going down (and they will). Extra points if the manufacturer gives a HomeAssistant integration.not sure I'll write my own firmware for the fridge
In my case, while most things in my house have their own shitty online service/app, I use them all (in local mode) via HomeAssistant, also HA is only available in the local network (or via VPN) reducing exposure to the internet.
