I think I'm liking my new method for enhancing very weathered petroglyphs. I'm using the combination drawn and parametric masks in a second Darktable exposure module instance. First I paint in where I want the mask. Then I adjust it using the parametric functions. Then I lighten the faded petoglyphs. What do you think? Does this image look too manipulated or does it look fairly natural?

Across the top is a wavy pattern of three small dots in parallel. They form a wave across the top. On the left under the wavy pattern of dots is what appears to be a person in a head dress that looks like a water fountain. The waves of dots may be coming out of the head dress. The person has claw feet and below the feet a wavy snaky line goes toward the bottom on the image and then turns 90 degrees and disappears off the left side. A smaller figure of a person is on the right. It has three fingered hands and maybe a short tail? The head looks like a duck (which is seen on other rock art panels in the area). Next to that figure, further to the right, is a geometric figure that looks like a gas pump and below that, not attached are two feet that look like swim fins. There' more lines, two actually, of wavy dots running from left to right through the big figure on the left and under the smaller figures on the right.

@elaterite side-by-side comparison with the unmodified petroglyph image would be good…

@gratefulwolf Oh, right, I didn't think about that. I'm not at my desktop so no can do right now. But if you look down in the lower right you can see some faint lines that I didn't manipulate for comparison.
