I think I'm liking my new method for enhancing very weathered petroglyphs. I'm using the combination drawn and parametric masks in a second Darktable exposure module instance. First I paint in where I want the mask. Then I adjust it using the parametric functions. Then I lighten the faded petoglyphs. What do you think? Does this image look too manipulated or does it look fairly natural?
@elaterite Not knowing the site, I find the photo realistic and not particularly manipulated.
@manup Thank you! I left a small portion of it in the lower right as it was. So that could be used as a comparison. It's in southeast Utah.
@elaterite (having never seen a desert irl) this looks good to me. Reminded a bit of ancient pottery too
@Frieke72 Thank you!
@elaterite side-by-side comparison with the unmodified petroglyph image would be good…
@gratefulwolf Oh, right, I didn't think about that. I'm not at my desktop so no can do right now. But if you look down in the lower right you can see some faint lines that I didn't manipulate for comparison.
@elaterite Looks rather natural to me!
@kernpanik Thank you!
@elaterite seeing it without context of the unmodified image (which you said you will add once able), looks good.
How detailed is the mask you draw?
@elaterite
I think it looks fine, I don't know the original though.
And thank you for posting this kind of stuff, I really appreciate it. It lowers the stress and angst I feel about the world. It's a bit like opening a door to a safe place, a shelter, even if it is for just a moment, because that moment's effect lasts for longer.
@elaterite , looks great, well done.
@Antigrav Thanks!
@elaterite Compared to the lower right mountains? it looks manipulated, but not in an unnatural way. I think you have a good process there.
