This month begins my fifth year now as a breadmaker, and I'm celebrating by making bread literally every weekday this winter, because it's endlessly cold and crappy in Chicago right now and this is a much better way to spend my hours these days than being outside, plus provides such a warm and nice-smelling environment for those who have been forced to be out and are now just getting back home. Here in year 5, however, I've made something like 300 of these Rustic French boules you're seeing here, so I decided this winter it's time to up my game, to what I euphemistically call "you know, that Instagram shit." That includes not just the rice-flour-covered white-colored loaf you're seeing (which we covered in the last post), but now my new stencils, which you make with rice flour (white) or cocoa powder (brown). This is my first time, so they came out only so-so; they'll be getting more precise and less messy with future loaves. More of this all winter!

Two loaves of artisan Rustic French bread, baked in the boule style (French for "ball"). One is a golden brown and has an intricate pattern stenciled on top using rice flour, with a full-length score along the entire right side. The other has had rice flour sprinkled all over it, turning the entire crust a silver gray, and a brown pattern has been stenciled on top with cocoa powder. It took has a top-to-bottom score running the entire length of the boule's right side.

I have never really gotten the hang of spray paint, and since I have the opportunity to work on large outdoor #canvases, it seemed like the perfect time to experiment with making #stencils based on artwork from the #Watchmen movie. For this attempt, I used card stock and sent it through a vinyl cutter with the traced design from the film’s #artwork. In order to keep the edges down, I used tiny glue dots that are popular among scrapbookers.

Upturned Boats has now been photographed properly and is available in my shop!

It is a six colour screenprint made entirely from hand made stencils using paper cuts, brush strokes, pencil and ink pen marks.

By its nature, nothing lines up perfectly! Because I cut everything out by hand there are small gaps and overlaps but this adds to the enjoyment of the print I think.

It is a limited edition of 50 and is numbered and signed by me.

The size of the paper is 35cm x 47cm approximately. The artwork size is 21cm x 30cm approximately.

It's printed in six colours on Fabriano 5 210gsm printing paper.

I hope you enjoy it!
