Midday Sunday sauna. Yesterday was too windy for sauna so we hoped for milder weather and got it today. While the sauna is heating up I’m sitting outside reading and enjoying a cup of coffee with a chocolate chip cookie, from a batch that my daughter made yesterday.
This coffee cup is a kuksa - a traditional (Lapland) drinking cup hand carved from a birch burl

After that I made some soup and turned the stove into a salt flat. 750 g salt to 3 liters of water and boiled for four hours. But I didn't put the soup in a bowl, I put the bowl in the soup. HA! Apparently #Kuksa in Finland and Sweden are disinfected in a similar way and the wood is said to get protected from possible cracks. Let's see if I managed it that way, too. Now it needs to dry for a while. #woodcraving

Kuksa is done. I really love working tan oak. Very nice to carve and looks amazing and even more so when it's spalted.

Making a kuksa for the SHTF kit and camping. Filling the termite damage with epoxy. I actually found a live termite while hollowing the bowl. Messed the poor little lady up pretty bad with the gouge chisel. Was not intentional. Spalted tan oak.

Après plusieurs séances de ponçage, j'ai mis la première couche d'huile d'olive sur ma #kuksa.
Je n'ai pas pris le temps de faire le passage dans l'eau bouillante salée.. J'espère que ça ira quand même.

@dhal : J'ai plusieurs pistes:
1) j'ai fendu la buche en deux au départ, ce qui permet de limiter les contraintes qui s'exerce dans un bois qui sèche.

2) j'ai laissé la #kuksa dans un sac en plastique avec ses copeaux jusqu'ici. Il y a presque trop d'humidité dans le sac, les copeaux commençaient à pourir, mais ça a pas séché trop vite du coup.

J'en suis à quelques petites séances de ponçage sur ma deuxième #kuksa.
Pour l'instant, uniquement au gros grain. Ça commence à être joli. Toujours pas de fentes!
J'ai à peine commencé l'intérieur, il me reste du taf avant de passer à un papier de verre plus fin.

Comme pressenti, ma première #kuksa s'est fendue à plusieurs endroits.
J'ai bien fait de m'arrêter et d'en commencer une autre aux premiers signes.
Leçons:
- toujours fendre la buche en deux pour limiter les tensions lors du séchage.
- toujours faire sécher dans un sac avec les copeaux, pour que ça sèche lentement.
