Whitmer signs Michigan gun ban for domestic abusers | Detroit | Detroit Metro Times
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed legislation aimed to keep guns out of abusers’ hands in Kalamazoo, 24 years after the tragic death of Maggie Wardle, 19, at the hands of an ex-boyfriend.
“I could jump for joy,” Maggie’s mother, Martha Omilian, told the Advance after Whitmer signed a series of bills that extend gun restrictions to those who are convicted of domestic violence-related crimes from just those with felonies to misdemeanors offenses.
“If one person … maybe somebody doesn’t have to go through this,” Martha said. “I will sit with this for the rest of my life. It’s the last thing I think about at night and the first thing I think about in the morning.”

@GottaLaff Don't just #VOTE; follow through. Stay in touch with elected officials - whether you like them or not. We need people in office to do the work. Pass #electionreform #termlimits #abortionrights #gunlegislation
The story doesn't end with the demise of a mass shooter, or finding his apparent motivation in killing many innocent people. It ends when we prevent others like him from obtaining instruments of destruction. #MaineShooting #GunLegislation #VoteTheGOPOut
Recall petitions filed against 5 Democratic, 1 Republican House members
Petitions to recall five Democratic state representatives in Michigan over their votes on recent hate crime and gun reform legislation were filed last week, according to the state Secretary of State’s office, as well as one petition against a Republican representative over his vote for the Democratic House speaker.
State Reps. Jennifer Conlin (D-Ann Arbor), Reggie Miller (D-Belleville) and Jaime Churches (D-Wyandotte) all had recall petitions filed against them by different people citing their yes votes on legislation, HB 4474, to expand the definition of hate crimes to include violence on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, age and disability.
Fox News and other right-wing outlets recently spread misinformation about Michigan’s proposed hate crime law reform package saying it would criminalize using the wrong pronouns for a person. Pronouns are not mentioned once in the legislation.
The recall petitions for Reps. Sharon MacDonell (D-Troy) and Betsy Coffia (D-Traverse City) cite their yes votes on the House’s version of “red flag” gun legislation to allow for judges to issue a temporary order for the removal of firearms for defendants that pose a significant threat to themselves or others. The red flag legislation coming from the Senate was signed into law, in addition to other gun law reforms in May.
Rep. Cam Cavitt of Cheboygan is the sole Republican lawmaker who had a recall petition filed against them last week, in his case citing his yes vote when the House elected Rep. Joe Tate (D-Detroit) to act as House speaker for the legislative session that began in January.

Sometimes I wonder if we don't have gun legislation because the people who could enact it are literally just afraid of the gun people. I'm not excusing their failure, just recognizing what a fucked up situation it is when one side includes people who are willing to defend their means of violence with violence.

Students as young as 8 yo in Texas may be trained how to apply tourniquets for traumatic gun injuries. Really??
At least one psychologist thinks it could have a negative impact on children’s mental health. Just wonder if there is anything else legislators could be doing to protect our families…
1 #bill would bar the transfer of a #gun for 3 years to someone who has been convicted of a #misdemeanor if they used, carried or possessed a gun during the #crime….
Another bill would require a 1-wk #WaitingPeriod before a #buyer can receive a #gun.
A 3rd bill, reintroduced w/US Sen Ed Markey (D-MA), would appropriate $250M for #GunViolencePrevention research at the #CDC during the next 5 yrs.

“Then Carrot said, "It's better to light a candle than curse the darkness, captain. That's what they say."
“What?" Vimes' sudden rage was like a thunderclap. "Who says that? When has that ever been true? It's never been true! It's the kind of thing people without power say to make it all seem less bloody awful, but it's just words, it never makes any difference…”

The RAND corporation has just released the 2023 edition of its book The Science of Gun Policy, which looks at the evidence on whether various policies work. The policies with the best evidence are child-access laws. There is also some empirical support for eliminating stand-your-ground laws and "shall-issue" concealed-carry laws. All of these are consistent with the 2nd amendment.

I don’t like guns.
But I don’t think this is the banned.
The only way to slow growing mass murder pandemic is by regulating guns.
I don’t think I’m qualified to offer sensible gun legislation.
Unfortunately, every time I ask a gun enthusiast, “what are some sensible gun laws we can enact to stop this problem,” they tell me they are none. Then they rant about personal responsibility.
That is psychotic and completely anti-personal responsibility.
Because THEY can make the rules that will protect people They refused to.
And because they are so anti-responsibility, there will come a time when the mass murdering is so out of control that their guns will be regulated in a fashion that is ACTUALLY against the Second Amendment, as opposed to the lies and BS propagated by the NRA.
If you actually love your guns, you need to demand legislation that encourages personal responsibility like you claim to love.
This seems like it should be a huge story that should initiate some federal legislation. How did no one act on this? #ColoradoShooting #BakerAct #MentalHealth #GunLegislation #HateCrimes https://apnews.com/article/colorado-springs-7c154b07dd3dd67355469f667a09a3d5
Unbelievable. #Biden and the #Democrats really need to think long and hard about what happens next. It seems that the #SCOTUS has a change agenda now that there is a 6-3 #Conservative majority.
