PixelfedPatrick Vanhoucke (@librarianbe@pixelfed.social)The Americans by Saul Steinberg. Saul Steinberg (1914-1999) was an American artist born in Romania. For more than 60 years, he created drawings and covers for The New Yorker magazine. In 1958, he was commissioned by the American government to create a work of art for the American pavilion at the World‘s Fair in Brussels (Expo 58). A futuristic circular building on the Heysel Plateau (in Laeken, in the north-west of the City of Brussels), which we still know today as the American Theatre (‘Amerikaans Theater’ in Dutch, because it was used for a long time for the studios of the Flemish public radio and television broadcaster, now VRT). ‘The Americans’ is a wall fresco in eight parts, measuring over 70 metres in length, inspired by the ‘American way of life’. In the spring of 2025, three of the eight panels were used as a backdrop for a press presentation by the Belgian luxury leather goods store Maison Delvaux. Maison Delvaux also supported the restoration of these three panels, as well as the five others, so that the work can be preserved and rediscovered in all its glory. The giant work was rarely shown because of its volume and fragility. But now, three panels of Saul Steinberg’s work are on display until 19 October 2025 on the first floor of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in a temporary exhibition space (admission included in a ticket to the permanent exhibition). (1) Signage in the museum directing visitors to the section where Saul Steinberg’s three panels of ‘The Americans’ are on display. (2) Detail from the panel ‘Main Street - Small Town’. Acquired in 1958. Inv. 7408. (3) Detail from the panel ‘Downtown - Big City’. Acquired in 1958. Inv. 7409. (4) Detail from the panel ‘Cocktail Party’. Acquired in 1958. Inv. 7413. #TheAmericans #SaulSteinberg #Brussels #Expo58 #FineArtsBelgium #RMFAB #MRBAB #KMSKB

When I watched #TheAmericans, one thing that stood out was how many scenes in that series were just two characters having quiet conversations with each other. It doesn't sound like much, but that show was able to pack so much tension and drama into those quiet conversations.
#Andor also does this really effectively. As a fan of spy thrillers, it's obvious that Gilroy and his writers really did their homework on making a really good spy story.

Right after the nightmare that happened in January, I decided to take a trip back to the 80's and rewatch "The Americans". I just finished the final episode.

While I do highly, highly recommend it to just about anyone, there are groups of people that it will hit harder than others. It's a show about loyalty to one's ideas. Our ideas about country, family, religion, parenting, friendship, and the American way.

It can also be a very violent show so I'm sure that's not for everyone. But, if you need an escape back to what seemed to be a simpler time, there is so much to love about the show. The acting is incredible. The music cues are spot on. The 80's tech and cars are perfect. It also has one of the best TV series finales that I've seen.

Be careful if you decide to watch an episode. You may just need to watch some more.

It’s fun to rewatch stuff eons after the first play through. The guy on the left is FBI Counterintelligence Agent Stan Beeman from #TheAmericans. One of the best shows out there.

Edit: somehow this isn’t the actor who played Beeman. I’m blown away. This is Glenn Morshower

It’s so gratifying to me, as someone who loved the show #TheAmericans from day one and watched it as it aired, to see it finally getting some of the viewership it deserved, now in streaming. I’m not surprised it’s aged well, but I am pleased. (And weirdly kind of…proud? My little show that could. ❤️)

I just watched the first few minutes of the final season of #TheAmericans and things have sure changed for Philip & Elizabeth. Great setup for the season. But there will only be 9 episodes after this and I'll have to find a new show to binge watch 😭

I pretty much just watch scifi and cartoons but I usually also have one semi-regular drama going. I don't know what's next!?
