„At least 8 U.S. Air Force C-17A … transport aircraft were tracked flying from Ramstein Air Base in Germany to Israel's Nevatim Airbase on Sunday.

According to flight tracking data (…), the mission is part of a broader operation that has seen at least 25 C-17 flights land in Israel since April 10, making it one of the largest such deployments in years.“

Newsweek · US Bolsters Israel With Airlift Amid Regional ThreatsBy Amir Daftari

We watched "Late Night with the Devil" (2023) tonight. I posted a #5SecondMovieReview of it earlier. We enjoyed it.

However... one little thing about it is nagging at me, like a splinter in the mind's eye.

It's a period piece, set in the #1970s. The major thread of the story includes a psychologist and her sessions with a patient, which are #recorded. Part of one is played back as part of a #television show, and onscreen during that #playback is an open-reel (aka reel-to-reel) #tape #deck playing a tape.

1970s, open-reel recording - it's #retro, it's #cool, it's period-authentic, right?

I can't shake the feeling that whoever put the visual together has never actually seen an open-reel tape recorder in operation. This picture is lousy, because it's a screencap from the movie, which is supposed to be showing a television broadcast in good old analog SD - but it gets the point across.

See anything wrong?

The takeup #reel, on the right, turns clockwise, the opposite direction of the (normal) direction of the supply reel. So the tape wraps onto the inner side of the takeup reel, and ends up "inside out".

There's also no tension arm on the supply side, and an apparent #tension arm on the takeup side, but it's not actually in the tape path.

I don't think any machines were actually made like this, but I'm not an #expert. Can anyone identify the deck they butchered or digi-simmed to create this #sin against nature? 😉

One #random occurrence about the #tension between the US and Canada that has popped up locally...

There are (and have been for a few months) billboards around my city announcing United Airlines' new direct flights between #Regina (#YQR) and #Denver (#DEN). The billboards announce that flights start May 15. This has almost certainly been in the planning stages for at least a year; it takes time to negotiate with #airport authorities, obtain clearance from a foreign government, figure out how to schedule planes and crews and ground services without screwing up any existing routes, and on and on.

This is a big deal for my city; it's a small city, with lousy connectivity to, well, everywhere. You pretty much have to connect to #flights in Calgary or other bigger cities to get anywhere by #plane from here. Direct flights from Regina to USA destinations come and go over time as airlines try it, abandon it, rinse and repeat with a different airline.

And in the last couple of months, because of Orange Donny's decision to light #Canadian goodwill for the #USA on fire while dancing naked in the glow [1], air travel numbers from #Canada to the USA are down ... 70% from a year ago, at last report.

I don't think there is any air route which can be operated #profitably at 30% #occupancy.

I'm guessing those direct flights are not going to stick around long this time, either.

[1] I probably should have bought stock in a brain #bleach company before saying this.

Fissure among Conservatives undermining Poilievre's pitch he's a national unifier: experts
Long-simmering tensions within the Conservative movement are bursting out into the federal election, experts say — undercutting Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s efforts to present himself as a unifier who can take on U.S. President Donald Trump.
