Before you accuse me of the American need for a happy Hollywood ending with a Hero's Journey and redemption, you have got to consider if no one in your story is likable and you kill off everyone at the end, have you committed an act of existential violence against your audience?

Is your whole point is that people are terrible and life is senseless? Why share that?

That kind of ending gives no one anything to cheer for, no hope, no love, no faith, no sacrifice, no truth. Nothingness.

Different Than

My ex (technically still wife) and I have both commented on some of the commonalities of our partners for the last few years: liberal, in helping-type professions, and with a ridiculous amount more substance use experience and knowledge.

It has occurred to me that this is just baseline and not so interesting, really:

  • No way would we have dated anyone conservative at this point in our lives

  • We both have connections to helping professions

  • We were Mormon for the ~20 years of our marriage, so yeah, everyone has more substance use experience and knowledge than we do.
