Depuis le fort séisme du 13 mars, on entend beaucoup parler de la situation dans les Champs Phlégréens, le vaste système volcanique situé sous l’agglomération de #Naples. Souvent avec les mots « supervolcan » ou « superéruption » pour faire peur… Rétablissons donc quelques faits.
– Si l’on s’en tient strictement à la définition, il n’y a jamais eu de superéruption des Champs Phlégréens. Ce terme correspond à une #éruption avec un index d’explosivité volcanique (VEI) de 8, correspondant à un volume éjecté > 1000 km³. Or le #volcan a connu au maximum des éruptions de VEI 7 (> 100 km³). Ça reste une éruption catastrophique, on est d’accord, mais pas « super » (on sent là tout l’absurde du préfixe…).
– Si le volcan a bien connu une éruption de VEI 7 dans la période géologique « récente » (l’éruption campanienne, il y a environ 39 000 ans), ainsi qu’une de VEI 6 (> 10 km³, le tuf jaune napolitain, vers 15 000 ans), son activité depuis est faite d’événements bien plus modestes.
– Ainsi, la toute dernière éruption des Champs Phlégréens, en 1538, est seulement classée VEI 2 et n’a fait que construire un petit cône, le Monte Nuovo. L’apparition d’un tel cône dans une zone aujourd’hui densément peuplée serait assurément problématique, mais on est loin du caractère catastrophique d’un effondrement de caldeira avec expulsion de dizaines de kilomètres cubes de magma !
