If Trump wanted to make the American #garment factory competitive, he would need to slap a 230% #tariff on #Lesotho. Let's assume for a moment that he does that. Let's also assume that all players (US factory, US brand and Walmart) all cut their margins in half to keep the eventual price as low as they can.

Factory sells to brand for $35
Brand sells to Walmart $40
Walmart sells it to you for $45

The price you pay just shot up from $20 to $45 a pair.

How #tariffs (don't) work: a thread

You have probably seen news stories about #Lesotho, the small impoverished landlocked African country that Trump has targeted with 50% tariffs. It mostly exports denim jeans to the US.

Let us first look at #apparel economics before tariffs.

To make a pair of jeans, the #garment factory in Lesotho spends:
$3 in labor
+ $3 in raw materials (fabric, buttons, zipper, etc.), and
+ $3 to cover fixed costs (building, machinery, utilities, etc.)
= $9
