3/3 orchestral pieces we played at #Cowley #Orchestra this Wednesday: This week's musical was #Showboat by #JeromeKern - also a favourite we play around once per term. There are five selections left which we didn't get round to this week. Next week the conductors are back in charge but maybe they'll take on one of my leftovers in which case I'll highlight thoses as well. youtube.com/watch?v=gaMtmxVs1V #Oxford

They Didn't Believe Me, by Jerome Kern, 1914. Widely regarded as the song that heralded the era of the Great American Song Book. Its innovations included using four beats to the bar, rather than the customary waltz-rhythms, as well as everyday language rather than flowery, more operatic language from Europe. Popular music in America would never be the same. This lovely version is by Julie London.
