Charging the Heart

Do you need fuel for the soul? If so, you might want to visit Soul Service Station, a Desert X art installation created by Alison Saar, located in Desert Hot Springs, CA. On a cool night after the rains had come, I perched my camera on a tripod, opened the shutter for a long time, then walked around lighting this subject with a handheld light. The mountains in the back are Joshua Tree National Park, my spiritual home for night photography.

As with most large scale outdoor art installations it’s really hard to capture the scale or experience in a photo. If anyone is visiting the Coachella Valley in the next few weeks I highly recommend checking them out. Desert X has a free app you can use to locate and learn more about each installation. apps.apple.com/app/id145031903

(Edit: there is an Android App as well available on their website)

We saw 7 of the 9 installations and they were mostly fantastic. A few will be fun to revisit at different times of the day (or even at night). One kinda fell flat despite sounding interesting in description. I do wish we’d seen them with fewer people milling about but I think most of them will stick around for quite a while so we can venture back once the festival is done. #desertx
