So I wound up waking at 7 am, which would be fine if I'd gotten to bed before 3 am.

I had an appointment to get COVID-19 and flu vaccinations this afternoon. However, the pharmacist said that there isn't a new formulation for the flu vaccine, and as I got vaccinated for it in September, there was no point in getting another. Then she helpfully reminded me that I hadn't had a pneumonia vaccination in too long. So I got a COVID-19 and pneumonia 2-scoop vaccine sundae.

I still haven't gotten a shingles vaccine. I think it would be wise. Not in conjunction with a COVID-19 sledgehammer, though. Those always kick my butt for a day, and today's that day.

Woo.

I was the only masked person anywhere, although the first Lyft driver offered to wear one because I was.

A few weeks ago, there were a number of posts about 5 years on from COVID, may rewrite history. I have followed he WHO press briefings from he start in January 2020. Why did I wait till now, becase Tomorrow, he 23rd marks a most important 5th anniversary, of he most important White House Press Briefing that Trump succesfully disrtacted from most important facts. He had promised it woudl all go away by April and he wasn't going to let science say otherwise.

Some act as if they are impervious to #COVID19 infection because they got the latest vaccine. While getting jabbed can be helpful, it is far from a guarantee.

The CDC found that vaccine effectiveness (VE) of last fall's vaccine was just 33% against COVID-19–associated emergency department or urgent care visits and 45%–46% against hospitalizations among immunocompetent adults aged ≥65 years.

Only a fifth of older Australians are up to date with COVID boosters
By Olivia Willis

Less than half of Australia's aged care residents aged 75 years and older are up to date with their COVID-19 vaccinations, despite being at highest risk of severe health outcomes.

ABC News · Low COVID-19 booster rates in aged care and older Australians prompt warnings ahead of winterBy Olivia Willis

I believe our children are the future,
Shield them well and let them breathe with ease.
Show them safety in a world uncertain,
Help them to avoid this damn disease.

COVID came and stole so many dreams away,
Long COVID lingers, hearts and bodies fray.
But we can rise, protect their light,
And guide them through the darkest night.

The greatest love of all,
Is keeping children safe from harm.
Protecting them from COVID’s call,
We hold their future in our arms.

BioMed CentralPost COVID-19 among young adults– prevalence and associations with general health, stress, and lifestyle factors - BMC Public HealthBackground The prevalence of post COVID-19 condition (PCC) after mild infection among young adults is largely unknown, as are its impact on health and lifestyle factors. Objective To assess the prevalence of PCC among young adults and its impact on general health, stress, and changes in lifestyle factors three years after the onset of the pandemic. Methods The study population (n = 2,098) included participants from the population-based cohort BAMSE (aged 27–30 years). PCC symptoms and changes in lifestyle factors during the pandemic were assessed in a questionnaire distributed in September–December 2023 and analyzed cross-sectionally. Stress, physical activity, and general health were also assessed pre-pandemic (2016–2019) and analyzed longitudinally. PCC was defined as ≥ 1 symptom lasting for ≥ 2 months after COVID-19. Results In total, 1,577 (75.5%) reported previous COVID-19. Among these, 166 (10.5%) reported previous and 62 (3.9%) ongoing PCC. The most common ongoing symptoms were altered smell/taste, psychological symptoms, and fatigue. Both pre- and post-pandemic general health differed significantly in relation to PCC in cross-sectional analyzes (all p < 0.05), with the lowest health reported by those with ongoing PCC. Participants with ongoing PCC also had a reduction in well-being in longitudinal analyses (p = 0.04). This group also reported more adverse changes in lifestyle factors and health during the pandemic such as reduced physical activity (p < 0.001) and worsened dietary habits (p = 0.03). However, there was no significant difference in the longitudinally measured perceived stress scale among individuals with PCC. Conclusions Almost 4% of young adults with previous self-reported COVID-19 had ongoing symptoms of PCC three years after the onset of the pandemic. This group reported poorer health and more adverse changes in lifestyle factors than participants without PCC. Targeted healthcare interventions for young adults with PCC are warranted.

SpringerLinkAssociations of epigenetic aging and COVID- 19: A 3-year longitudinal study - GeroScienceAging and COVID- 19 are known to influence DNA methylation, potentially affecting the rate of aging and the risk of disease. The physiological functions of 54 volunteers—including maximal oxygen uptake (VO₂ max), grip strength, and vertical jump—were assessed just before the COVID- 19 pandemic and again 3 years later. Of these volunteers, 27 had contracted COVID- 19. Eight epigenetic clocks were used to assess the rate of aging during the 3-year period: DNAmAge showed accelerated aging, and five clocks showed slowed aging (DNAmAgeSkinBlood, DNAmAgeHannum, DNAmFitAge, PhenoAge, and DNAmTL). When we considered only females, we observed a stronger effect in the increase of DNAmAge acceleration, while we observed slowed aging in the case of SkinBloodClock, and DNAmTL. The methylation of the promoter region of the H1 FNT genes, which encodes testis-specific histone H1 family member N (H1fnt) and plays a crucial role in spermatogenesis decreased the most significantly. In contrast, the promoter of CSTL1, which encodes Cystatin-like 1, showed the most significant increase. We found that having COVID- 19 during the 3-year study period significantly increased the progress of aging assessed by DNAmGrimAge, DNAmGrimAge2, and DNAmFitAge (p = 0.024, 0.047, 0.032, respectively, after we adjusted the analysis for baseline variables). The data suggest that COVID- 19 may have a mild long-term effect on epigenetic aging.

One of the things that concerns me about the #COVID19 aware community is the stringent attitude some have about the type of masks people wear. Yes, I prefer people masked to wear N95s or better, but in a world where almost no one is masking, I also welcome cloth and surgical masks because something is better than nothing.

STUDY finds: Filtration efficiency for cloth masks was 47–55% compared to 97–98% for N95 and CaN99 without fit testing.

journals.plos.orgMeasuring the fitted filtration efficiency of cloth masks, medical masks and respiratorsImportance Masks reduce transmission of SARS-CoV2 and other respiratory pathogens. Comparative studies of the fitted filtration efficiency of different types of masks are scarce. Objective To describe the fitted filtration efficiency against small aerosols (0.02–1 µm) of medical and non-medical masks and respirators when worn, and how this is affected by user modifications (hacks) and by overmasking with a cloth mask. Design We tested a 2-layer woven-cotton cloth mask of a consensus design, ASTM-certified level 1 and level 3 masks, a non-certified mask, KF94s, KN95s, an N95 and a CaN99. Setting Closed rooms with ambient particles supplemented by salt particles. Participants 12 total participants; 21–55 years, 68% female, 77% white, NIOSH 1–10. Main Outcome and Measure Using standard methods and a PortaCount 8038, we counted 0.02–1 µm particles inside and outside masks and respirators, expressing results as the percentage filtered by each mask. We also studied level 1 and level 3 masks with earguards, scrub caps, the knot-and-tuck method, and the effects of braces or overmasking with a cloth mask. Results Filtration efficiency for the cloth mask was 47–55%, for level 1 masks 52–60%, for level 3 masks 60–77%. A non-certified KN95 look-alike, two KF94s, and three KN95s filtered 57–77%, and the N95 and CaN99 97–98% without fit testing. External braces and overmasking with a well-fitting cloth mask increased filtration, but earguards, scrub caps, and the knot-and-tuck method did not. Limitations Limited number of masks of each type sampled; no adjustment for multiple comparisons. Conclusions and Relevance Well-fitting 2-layer cotton masks filter in the same range as level 1 masks when worn: around 50%. Level 3 masks and KN95s/KF94s filter around 70%. Over a level 1 mask, external braces or overmasking with a cloth-mask-on-ties produced filtration around 90%. Only N95s and CaN99s, both of which have overhead elastic, performed close to the occupational health and safety standards for fit tested PPE (>99%), filtering at 97–99% when worn, without formal fit testing. These findings inform public health messaging about relative protection from aerosols afforded by different mask types and explain the effectiveness of cloth masks observed in numerous epidemiologic studies conducted in the first year of the pandemic. A plain language summary of these findings is available at https://maskevidence.org/masks-compared.

“The mediation analysis suggested, once infected, vaccinated children & adolescents were just as likely to develop #longCOVID as their unvaccinated peers. This seemed to indicate no additional, special protective effect once infection occurred.

“Preventing #COVID19 infections in the first place, including through vaccination, appears to be the best way to avoid long #COVID
