When the the melody truly starts in Beyoncé’s “American Requiem”, it strongly reminded me of another song, but I couldn’t place it, and nobody seemed to be mentioning it. There are plenty of other homages people mention, but not this one. I knew it was late 60’s / early 70’s; the whole song feels a bit like a protest song from that era.

I finally figured it out.

It’s Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth”

Listen to the first 20 seconds of this: youtu.be/80_39eAx3z8?si=72-NtO

And compare it to the first 15 seconds of American Requiem starting at this point: youtu.be/vp3BSjJdyow?si=9cHOHm

Am I imagining it?

When I saw “Blackbird” in the track list for “Cowboy Cover” I was expecting a couple of lyrics inspired by the Beatles classic. Maybe a sample at most.

Instead Beyonce gave us a truly inspired cover of one of my favourite songs of all time. What a gift 🥹

The whole album is amazing too. She did it.
