Daphne<p>My partner and I went to Cambridge last night to see Alison Bechdel speak at the Brattle and do a reading from her new book.</p><p>She's obviously funny and insightful on paper, but even after the reading (and an author doing a reading of her graphic novel is an interesting thing in general), she spoke directly to the audience which was quite wonderful. She mentioned she was such an introvert that she was going to go back to her hotel afterwards and pass out, which, yeah, I get it. But she was brilliant.</p><p>It was a sold out, and pretty queer crowd. I don't think I understood when I came out how different being in a crowd versus being in a _queer_ crowd would affect me.</p><p>I'm also an introvert. Crowds absolutely exhaust me. Book

I just finished reading Fun Home my Alison Bechdel today.

It was beautiful, insightful, a mix of realism, unreality, and critique, and not fun.

Must graphic novels specifically, and all media generally, be fun? I don't think so. But this was a slog; a dispassionate introspection which was too close to one's own personal experience.
