Two TV series about magic I really like:

Motherland: Fort Salem
imdb.com/title/tt9900092/

The Magicians
imdb.com/title/tt4254242/

Both do many things well: how magic works, the characters, the stories, etc.

@rauschma thank you for this! I bought and watched *Motherland: Fort Salem* and absolutely adored it. It was such a refreshing experience watching a show that totally centers women, it's kind of broken almost all other shows for me 😂

I wrote a review about the show fasiha.github.io/post/motherla I hope it gets more popular, I think a lot of folks will love what it offers!

fasiha.github.ioRecentered storytelling: a review of Motherland: Fort SalemBy decentering men and making powerful women the focus of its society, Motherland: Fort Salem has found a storytelling winning formula

@22 Cool! So my post triggered your purchase?

Their world is so rich that I’m hoping it’ll be revisited eventually.

@rauschma yup! I hadn’t heard of this show until your post! *Magicians* is on Netflix which I subscribe to so I watched it first, solid, and Amazon sells each season of *Motherland: Fort Salem* for a reasonable US$20 😁. Thank you again!!!

I definitely agree with you on the worldbuilding! If this show takes off, it’ll be thanks to you 🤩!

It reminded me how wonderfully refreshing it is to immerse yourself in stories where people like you aren’t centered, and where people who are traditionally decentered dominate the spotlight. It actually sent me down an unexpected road! I expected to try another witches or women-themed show but I actually got into Native American productions! *Dark Winds* is a police procedural on Netflix set in the 1970s in the Navajo Nation—I do not love copaganda but I absolutely loved this show. Intense. Now I’m watching the hilarious teenage comedy *Reservation Dogs* on Hulu: the trailer had me hooked within the first 20 seconds m.youtube.com/watch?v=3YEKDoIj 😂

@22 I gave “Reservation Dogs” a shot but, alas, it didn’t quite work for me.

Are you aware of the animated TV show “The Last Airbender”? Still one of my favorites. Caveat: The first 1–3 episodes (à ca. 20 minutes) put some people off. It’s after those that the show really finds its footing.

@rauschma thanks for sharing! Yeah I totally get that *Rez Dogs* is totally unrelated to *Motherland* and the only connection was made in my mind 😆 specifically, my delight at seeing a show completely dominated by people who I don’t see dominating my media (Native American kids in the former, women in the latter), so I can see it not being everyone’s cup of tea. (I need to think about why exactly I love it so much 😁)

Airbender! Yes I love that show, the generation that watched it as kids were among the first digital natives so we have such an amazing online fan record of reactions to that show 😁 (I’m older than that generation but can appreciate the love). Have you seen *Dragon Prince: Mystery of Aaravos* (on Netflix in the US)? It’s the sophomore series by a couple of Airbender alums which I didn’t know going into it but as I watched the show that DNA became quite obvious. It’s not as immediately huge of a world as Avatar but it gets there—everything I loved about Avatar is there in Aaravos, and more.

@22 I liked “Dragon Prince”, but the jokes and the characters did not work as well for me as those in Airbender: Too often, characters do something stupid because it helps the plot.

Season 5 had weaknesses: It was slow, the character Terry was not well written and I didn’t care about the Sunfire Elf conflict.

The overall story is great and Lord Viren works really well as a character.

@rauschma dang, you reminded me—I’d forgotten all those bits and only remembered my overall warm feelings. Sounds like you really like your magic shows (Motherland, Magicians, Airbender/Korra), is that just coincidence or is that a genre you’ve liked for a long time? I ask because, Netflix has *Alchemy of Souls*, a Korean magic-court-martial-arts dramedy I loved, with a strong female lead (though with the usual crowding with handsome men that Hallyu shows are known for 😅). I wonder if you’d like it?

@22 Thanks!

Yes, I like the escapism of fantastical shows. And that they expand one’s ideas of what is possible—vs. cynical shows (e.g. about violent crimes) that show the worst of humans. If I want to see that I can watch the news.

@rauschma Axel I have another possibly-terrible recommendation 😇 it’s magic like *Motherland* but, less serious and targeting the teen demographic: *Legacies* on Netflix (in the US).

I don’t know how cold you like to go into your shows, so I’ll just say, I went in cold and was surprised within the first episode at how much I liked it, flaws and all (just wrapped up the second (of four) seasons). I have no idea how something like *Legacies* can be so fun but it is for me 😁

@22 Thanks for the tip! I enjoyed “Vampire Diaries” and “The Originals” – until, in later seasons, their storylines became too convoluted for my taste. Will check it out.
