Owncast will soon be joining the Fediverse!
We had a little discussion about what went into, and what you can expect from Owncast's first step into federation.
@owncast let me know if you guys need any help. I deal mostly in infrastructure and security but I really like your idea.
Quite an oxymoron reading “Owncast” and seeing a YouTube link in the same post…
Come on guys. Seriously?
@owncast exciting upcoming features. really looking forward!
@owncast but, why is the link to YouTube?
That’s definitely not your own cast.
It's an inspiration to watch this team keep their eyes on the prize, unceasingly asking "what do livestreamers need to fight back?" and then doing the work to build those empowering tools.
@owncast Thanks so much! This sounds great!
While listening I came to the question: are you considering to share planned streams as events that people can share/follow? (maybe in a way compatible to mobilizon)
@hexmasteen Yes! There's a whole other planned set of features for scheduled events.
@owncast hmm, while I like the idea, and wouldn't have an issue with it myself, I can also see some users refraining from engaging with a post if that suddenly means their name/profile suddenly shows up in a livestream, especially when it comes to 'likes'/'favourites'.¹
Especially if the streamer archives their VODs to another platform, and now suddenly exposes that interaction to an entirely different audience than they perhaps intended.
I'm not saying it will become a problem, but I do hope it's something you're considering and perhaps keep in mind the possibility for adding some form of opt-out for the user, not just the streamer.
¹ (Quite some people don't even seem to be aware that 'likes' are actually public and that everyone can see who has liked a post; I've seen responses in the past when I pointed that out, that they thought only the OP could see that.)
